The Job at a Glance
The Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) provides financial Mortgage products/services to existing and potential new members applying through the branch retail network and potential overflow of CU1 online portal and phone channel applications in a confident and professional manner that assures efficient operations and exceptional service. Assertively executes cross selling with members and potential members to increase growth. The Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) is required to accurately open new mortgage and additional Credit Union 1 accounts. Process all lending requests, including interviewing, obtaining decisions, obtaining lending documents to ensure closing of the loan. This position also assists with more difficult transactions or service issues. Multitasking is required of this position to accommodate staffing needs throughout the mortgage team platform.
A Typical Day
- Build relationships with members by educating them about Mortgage products and services they could benefit from, helping them achieve their full economic potential.
- Remain cognizant of and adhere to Credit Union 1 Mortgage policies and procedures, industry norms and banking.
- Have advanced knowledge of duties and responsibilities performed as a Mortgage Loan Originator; utilize approval limits and privileges appropriately.
- Have a thorough understanding of the Credit Union's strategic initiatives and align individual performance to achieve those initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to sell/cross-sell business banking products to our existing client base to meet member needs.
- Handle complex situations with confidence, knowledge, and creativity.
- Assume responsibility for mortgage sales performance expectations, loan profitability and mortgage solutions team performance through individual contributions.
- Take on a leadership role within the Credit Union by living our Mission Statement of helping members achieve their fullest economic potential, increasing community and family financial success.
- Promote the credit unions' products and services based on member needs that are obtained from member interviews and/or review of member's account.
- Manage a self-developed pipeline of members and prospects for future selling opportunities with the objective of meeting members' needs that in turn exceed sales goals.
- Participate in mortgage sales, service, and product training meetings.
- Represent the credit union to members making it "Your Pleasure" to provide prompt, informative and convenient service that exceeds member expectations.
- Accountable for meeting individual mortgage sales goals and participating in team sales and referral goals.
- Maintain knowledge of all Credit Union products, services, procedures while staying informed of all policy and procedural changes.
- Respond to member requests, problems, and complaints, resolving issues, and/or directing them to the appropriate person for specific information and assistance. Handle complex questions and problems.
- Assess member loan needs from start to finish, starting with loan types, ancillary product review and submission of applications for approval. Finishing with the closing of the loan and follow up as needed.
- Screen loan documents to verify properly documented decision and completed paperwork is accurate.
- Assists in new employee training.
- Accepts empowerment and exercises independent decision-making skills.
- Adhere to all security policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned.

What We Look For
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing or related field of study preferred. Will accept any suitable combination of education, experience, and/or training
- Minimum 2 years' experience meeting creating business development programs, policies, and standards for member facing employees to ensure the ability to exceed member expectations and help members reach their full economic potential. Financial industry experience is preferred.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with ability to effectively communicate with members, peers and supporting staff
- Capable of undertaking tasks broad in nature, requiring ingenuity and originality
- Ability to operate independently, and exercise significant latitude for independent judgement, discretion, and action
- Working knowledge of computers and software
- Working on a team to exceed individual goals to reach collective credit union goals and team goals when needed
This position requires the employee to register as a mortgage loan originator with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry ("Registry") and obtain a unique identifier from the Registry before engaging in mortgage loan originator activities, to maintain and renew that registration on an annual basis, to update registration information with the Registry on a timely basis, and to provide that unique identifier to consumers as required by applicable SAFE Act regulations, policies and procedures
