Position Summary

ï‚· The MLW Technician II obtains blood specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, observing protocols and

methods established by The Department of Laboratories. The MLW Technician II unpacks, registers and

receives specimens, preparing them for processing, while locating and correcting any discrepancies, and

ensuring that specimens are preserved properly before forwarding them to the appropriate laboratory section.

Performs customer service related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

ï‚· Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.

ï‚· Ability to obtain blood specimens using varied technique on all age groups (where applicable)

ï‚· Responsible to remove specimens from transport bags, verifies proper identifiers on all requisitions; and promptly

follows-up on discrepancies or omissions on paperwork or specimens

ï‚· Responsible for entering ordered tests from outreach requisition into HIS to ensure that the ancillary laboratory

departments receive appropriate testing orders; prioritize workload to ensure the timely processing of all

specimens

ï‚· Responsible for labeling and dissemination of specimen to the proper laboratory department

ï‚· Demonstrate knowledge and use of client specific registration and accessioning procedures

ï‚· Responsible for answering all incoming outreach telephone calls and responding in order to resolve call in an

accurate, efficient and timely manner

ï‚· Responsible for faxing laboratory results to physician offices as requested

ï‚· To ensure seamless communication between shifts, responsible for documentation of all outreach issues in the

HIS for follow-up and resolution the next business day

ï‚· Review of the “Specimen Master Log” to ensure accuracy in the accessioning process

ï‚· Responsible for compiling all necessary supplies for outreach clients and documenting quantities in the HIS prior

to delivery

ï‚· Completes ICD-10 diagnosis coding for all MLW outreach accounts by entering the appropriate code into the HIS;

contact and follow-up with physician offices for diagnosis and/or ICD-10 codes if not provided on the submitted

requisition.

ï‚· Responsible for scanning all coded requisitions into the ELR of the HIS

ï‚· Responsible for STAT specimen pick-up at local physician office practices, as well as, dispatching contracted

courier service

ï‚· Responsible sorting, compiling and delivery of laboratory reports to local physician office practices

ï‚· Demonstrates knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures and their execution

ï‚· Completes job specific competency requirements

ï‚· Maintains a clean and organized work area - Demonstrate ability to maintain a safe environment and use

universal precaution

ï‚· Maintain supplies in a neat and orderly manner

ï‚· Ensures all client inquiries are responded to in a timely manner

ï‚· Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

ï‚· High School graduate or GED equivalent required

ï‚· Phlebotomy Certification preferred

ï‚· One year previous phlebotomy experience preferred

ï‚· Valid NYS driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required

ï‚· Ability to type 35 words per minute

ï‚· Previous experience in a healthcare environment preferred

ï‚· Medical terminology preferred

ï‚· Ability to use basic office equipment, basic computer skills, and knowledge of CTR computer terminals a plus

ï‚· Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time

ï‚· May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee

may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed

through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be

found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc
