Basic Function:
Under the leadership of the Medical Director of Laboratory, Administrative Director of Laboratory Services, and the Laboratory Supervisor, the Medical Technologist and Medical Laboratory Scientist must meet defined qualifications and fulfill expected responsibilities. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing laboratory testing and accurately reporting test results in order to obtain clinical test data for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of patients.

This position may require other related duties and activities as assigned by the Administrative Director of the Laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Required certification as an MLT, MT or MLS by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
- Must possess a
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
- Understands the use and limitations and be able to operate laboratory instrumentation. Must also be familiar with standard laboratory procedures, techniques and new developments in the field and have a working knowledge of the various fields of specialty work.
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory theory, practice, and scientific principles and ability to make decisions willingly and appropriately that reflect both knowledge of facts and good judgment. Ability to act as a resource person for personnel of other hospital departments when applicable. Possesses critical thinking skills.
- Knowledge of the hospital organization and laboratory policies and procedures.
- Must have a positive, professional attitude toward patients, visitors, physicians, and all SEORMC associates.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, exhibit initiative and good judgment, possess a memory for details, have patience, compassion and tact as required to meet the changing demands of the position.
- Possess ability to utilize computer software programs.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Performs moderate and high complexity testing as defined in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489.
- Reports accurate test results and correlates data (clerical and technical).
- Maintains clean, organized work area, including appropriate disposal of waste materials according to hospital policy and regulatory agency guidelines.
- Ensures testing is performed in compliance with manufacturer’s guidelines and the laboratory’s accrediting agency.
- Follows all established laboratory policies and procedures, including quality control, calibration, and maintenance, as approved by the Medical Director of the Laboratory.
- Knowledgeable in pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes to ensure the quality of laboratory services.
- Follows laboratory protocol for proficiency testing and proficiency testing results reporting.
- Coordinates efforts to effectively work with others in a way that is productive.
- Able to organize work and perform multiple tasks simultaneously during emergent or peak workload situations to expedite patient results reporting.
- Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to working environment.
- Uses spare time in work related activities contributing to the laboratory’s needs, consults with laboratory supervision for additional assignments that benefits the operations of the laboratory.
- Performs phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures as needed.
- Always greets patients in a courteous manner and verifies correct patient identification prior to specimen collection.
