About the Job
Reports to the Director of Clinical Informatics. Has expert knowledge of the clinical discipline and advanced knowledge of both information systems and the discipline of informatics. Responsibilities include the management and development of clinical systems and their respective impacts on clinical workflow and patient outcomes. Also responsible for the management and development of the Clinical Informatics Specialists who support those clinical systems. Additional responsibilities include project planning and implementation, training, quality assurance, troubleshooting and providing liaison support to clinical departments. Performs the essential duties of the Clinical Informatics Specialists position, as required.

Manages all activities of the Clinical Informatics Specialists and ensure the effective utilization of clinical computer systems by:
- Establishing and maintaining standards for quality, efficiency, timeliness and clinical outcomes.
- Scheduling the workload of the Clinical Informatics Specialists in accordance with the priority guidelines set by the Director and communicating with the Director any risks or concerns.
- Recruiting, hiring, evaluating, coaching, and, if necessary, disciplining assigned staff.
- Planning and coordinating ongoing training and development opportunities for assigned staff. Also ensuring a comprehensive orientation and training for new staff.
- Providing ongoing technical guidance and assistance to assigned staff.
- Ensuring that the users of Beacon's clinical systems are trained in the use of Beacon's systems (using verbal, written, and or demonstrated methods), as well as evaluating the effectiveness of the training.
- Coordinating the quality assurance of software through the utilization of life-like test scenarios and ensuring execution of said testing scenarios.
- Overseeing the resolution of problems within the clinical software systems.
- Overseeing clinical system security to ensure support of clinical care and respective workflows.
- Monitoring all projects and work assignments in progress and providing periodic status report to the Director.
- Overseeing the communications between assigned staff and the representatives of various end-user departments regarding clinical systems.
Establishes and maintains up-to-date knowledge regarding the business needs of clinical departments and serves as a liaison and facilitator by:
- Facilitating the effective utilization of clinical computer systems for maximum benefit to Beacon and its patient communities.
- Acting as a lead liaison and facilitator between the clinical informatics team and end-user departments regarding clinical applications and troubleshooting/documenting problems with software as well recommending improvements and solutions.
- Ensures the timely delivery of solutions to clinical end user departments which meet their needs in the most effective and efficient manner possible.
- Communicating with appropriate management personnel from various end-user departments regarding their business needs and maintaining communications with departments regarding information that may affect their respective areas.
- Establishing the communication systems and procedures necessary to maintain a high-level of coordination with the departments, as well as receive end-user feedback.
Supports Information Systems by:
- Providing excellent customer service at also communicating with customers and assigned staff in a courteous, responsive, and helpful manner.
- Seeking possible opportunities for effective utilization of Beacon's clinical system capabilities and communicating those findings with the Director.
- Performing the 'Essential Functions' of the Senior Clinical Informatics Specialist as needed.
- Maintaining department records, reports, and files as required. Also ensuring that assigned staff fulfill their responsibilities according to established departmental policies and procedures.
- Working cooperatively with other department staff on a variety of projects.
Maintains professional knowledge, skills, and competence in areas of responsibility by:
- Attending training and department meetings, also participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.
- Participating on committees as requested.
- Maintaining professional affiliations and memberships in related organizations, as appropriate.
- Reading current professional literature, publications, and journals.
Contributes to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the department and the implementation and maintenance of Beacon clinical software systems by:
- Has a leadership role in developing the common vision of the entire informatics specialist team. Demonstrates a high capacity for supporting change and translates it into work plans.

- Developing the training needs of informatics staff and instituting appropriate skill development plans for assigned staff.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge regarding the clinical-related day-to-day operations.
- Completing other job-related functions and work assignments, as directed, within the appropriate period.

- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The above level of knowledge, skills and abilities are normally acquired through the successful completion of a clinical bachelor degree program with a minimum of three years of clinical experience and five years of technical experience in the area of informatics or related technical field are required. An active clinical license to practice in the state of Indiana is also required. One to two years of supervisory/managerial experience is preferred. Preference will be given to graduates of a Clinical Informatics Program or candidates with Informatics certification. Training and experience with those software and hardware products regularly used by Beacon Health System and prior experience in a leadership role are desired.
Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of clinical day-to-day operations, policies and procedures. Also requires a solid understanding of user department processes and procedural changes and how Beacon departments interact with each other in a computerized environment.
- Requires a high level of technical skills and knowledge related to the clinical software applications used at Beacon. Also requires the management and leadership skills necessary for effective supervision of assigned staff.
- Requires a solid understanding of Information Systems departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
- Requires the organization, planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills, which are necessary to plan, estimate, and execute project activities and timelines and identify and resolve problems with viable solutions.
- Demonstrates the strong interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills necessary to build and maintain effective working relationships among all level of Beacon staff. Also requires the ability to disseminate information in a clear and concise manner to all levels of staff.
Working Conditions
- Works in an office/clinical environment.
- May need to vary days and hours scheduled, including working evenings and/or weekends as determined by department need.
- Must be able to be effective in a fast-paced, quality focused, multi-priority environment that frequently deals with stressful situations and important deadlines and schedules.
