Position Description

As a Metrology Engineer Technician at Applied Medical, you will play a pivotal role in developing inspection equipment and methods for medical device components. You will leverage your expertise in metrology to support the company's mission of delivering high-quality medical devices to improve patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implementation and Testing: Assist in researching, designing, and implementing inspection fixtures to execute specifications per engineering drawings. Execute test protocols and reports, conduct various testing, collect, and analyze data and trends.
- Maintenance and Tooling: Operate and/or program measurement equipment including but not limited to Keyence IM 7030T, Keyence LM-1100, Nikon VMR systems, and various measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, block gages, etc.
- Teamwork and Coordination: Work alongside the First Article Inspection and Polymer Process Development teams in inspecting materials, tooling, fixtures, etc. and assist with engineering projects and implementation of inspection equipment. Communicate with various departments regarding actions required by the engineering team. Plan, organize, and perform tasks and deliverables related to engineering projects.
Performance Objectives:
Within your first 30 days:
- Complete all Applied Learning foundational courses and review relevant documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and quality records to familiarize yourself with organizational structure, demonstrating rapid integration into company processes.
- Understand the functionality and operation of all metrology equipment used in the organization, gaining proficiency in measurement methods for various instruments and equipment.
- Gain proficiency in software programs used for metrology data analysis, such as statistical analysis tools or specialized metrology software.
- Develop basic troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve minor issues with measurement equipment under supervision. Identify potential areas for process improvement within the metrology department and suggest possible solutions.
- Familiarize yourself with the Applied Medical’s QMS, including quality policies, procedures, documentation, and relevant metrology standards related to metrology.
- Learn to accurately document measurement results, including measurement data and procedures, and equipment specifications.
- Understand and adhere to safety protocols and regulations while handling metrology equipment and performing measurements tasks.
- Spend time shadowing experienced metrology technicians to learn best practices and gain practical insights into daily tasks. Begin building relationships with colleagues in other departments to understand their metrology needs and how the metrology team can support them.
Within 60 days:
- Demonstrate proficiency in operating and troubleshooting a wide range of metrology equipment, including complex instruments and systems.
- Assist in developing and optimizing measurement methods to improve efficiency and accuracy in the metrology process.
- Develop project management skills to effectively plan and execute metrology projects, including documentation review to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Explore opportunities for cross-training with other departments and actively contribute to team meetings and collaborative efforts to share insights and propose solutions for continuous improvement in metrology processes.
Within 90 days to one year:
- Develop specialized expertise in specific areas of metrology through training and pursuit of relevant certifications to enhance credibility and proficiency.
- Take on leadership roles within the metrology team, such as leading projects, coordinating workflow, and mentoring junior technicians to foster team growth and development.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and ensure ongoing compliance with quality system requirements.
- Develop strong relationships with internal and external customers, understanding their metrology needs, providing proactive support, and seeking feedback for continuous improvement.
- Stay updated on emerging metrology technologies, industry trends, and best practices through external training and engagement in research and development projects to enhance measurement capabilities and support organizational objectives.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and quality system standards by maintaining accurate documentation, conducting internal audits, and addressing non-conformities or corrective actions related to metrology processes.
- Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for metrology processes and services, such as turnaround time, accuracy, and customer satisfaction, to drive continuous improvement efforts and demonstrate value to the organization.
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma, technical trade school training, or equivalent technical experience.
- Experience with metrology software, measurement equipment, and tools.
- Knowledge of 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawings per American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with a variety of computer programs including spreadsheets and word processing.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to metrology and quality control.
Preferred
- Experience with designing fixtures or tooling in SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Experience drafting engineering documents such as Manufacturing/Quality Instructions, test methods, drawings, and test reports.
- Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Gage R&R. Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack up, and manufacturing processes for precision machined parts.
