Job DescriptionEAG is seeking a Metallographer/Metallurgical Laboratory Technician to join our team of Metallurgists and Senior Failure Analysis Consultants.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform metallographic sample preparation on a variety of metals and materials using methods that include:
- Sectioning with saws/cutting tools; using a variety of hand tools to disassemble components and extract specimens.
- Handling delicate one-of-a-kind samples.
- Vacuum encapsulation metal/materials in a variety of mounting media.
- Precision sample preparation of specimens using a variety of abrasives with both manual and automated procedures.
- Chemical etching to reveal the microstructure.
- Optical microscopy using metallographs and lighting techniques.
- Technical Associate’s degree or accredited technical education is preferred.
- Knowledge of standard metallurgical and chemical laboratory safety procedures.
- 5-10 years' work experience with metallurgical laboratory equipment operation, including metallographic sample preparation equipment, hardness/micro-hardness testing and digital photography.
- Photo documentation skills using digital cameras and digital macroscopy such as Keyence systems.
- Familiarity with hardness and microhardness testing techniques.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are required to ensure efficient execution of provided procedures.
- Interface with clients as necessary for specific laboratory needs.
- Interest and desire to learn new techniques for metallurgical analysis and lab practice, metallography and materiallography.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to operate a personal computer or lab equipment for extended periods of time (4 or more hours).
- Ability to operate a keyboard and other lab equipment, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels.
- Ability to communicate clearly and understandably ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting.
- Ability to handle small and fragile devices with tweezers and /or fingers.
- Require close distance visual acuity.
- Must be willing and able to wear PPE such as ESD shoes, safety glasses, laboratory coat and/or any other devices or equipment that is required.
- Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with visitors, ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.
- Ability to move equipment or items up to 50 lbs.

Additional InformationPay Range: $30/hr - $40/hr (Pay is commensurate with experience and degree of technical expertise.)
