POSITION TITLE: Mental Health Counselor
COMPENSATION: Salary based on Board Approved Certified Compensation Plan
CLASSIFICATION: Full Time Exempt
REPORTS TO: School Principal
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Mental Health Counselor will be responsible for providing prevention & counseling services (related to the delivery of mental health care) to students at a designated school location. The Mental Health Counselor will provide consultation services to school staff and support the overall mental health goals of the school and district.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides direct mental health services (individual/group sessions) to students.
- Provides prevention services and supports the District’s SEL curriculum.
- Assists students in understanding and overcoming social, emotional, and behavioral challenges that impacts learning.
- Provides classroom presentations.
- Identifies, assesses, and responds to students in crisis.
- Attends 504, IEP, SAT, and other meetings to support students’ social and emotional needs and goals.
- Participates in the school site’s PBIS program.
- Maintains confidential counseling records and documentation.
- Participates on the District’s Crisis Response Team.
- Attends scheduled Counseling PLC meetings, strategic planning meetings, and school site meetings.
- Provides consultation & training to school staff related to trauma informed care, social emotional learning, and other mental health topics.
- Participates in the collection of mental health data and submits monthly reports in a timely manner.
- Maintains regular contact with parents and assists with community resource referrals for continuous care.
- Furnishes DCS reports and works with community agencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Must possess a strong knowledge of common diagnoses and treatment for school-aged children and possess the skills necessary to facilitate positive change in a school environment.
- Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, confidentiality, and special education.
- Knowledge of brief therapy theories and interventions.
- Skill in interviewing, assessment, goal setting, data collection, and evaluation.
- Ability to service students in-person and/or online.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Required - A Master’s degree from an accredited university or college in the field of behavioral health or school counseling.
- Required - School Counselor certificate or School Social Work certificate through ADE.
- Preferred - Associate or Independent Behavioral Health License with the AZ Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (LAC, LPC, LMSW, LCSW, AMFT, MFT).
CLEARANCES:
A prospective employee must have the following clearances before servicing students:
- Valid AZ Driver’s License
- Valid AZ Dept. of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Travel may be required between schools.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, community members, and outside agencies.
