The Vitreous State Laboratory (VSL) is a leading research and technology development center dedicated to solving environmental problems. VSL's interdisciplinary approach combines elements of physics, chemistry, and engineering to provide expertise for various research efforts related to material properties. The laboratory specializes in materials research, particularly in the field of glass and ceramic materials.
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $35,000/year
Responsibilities:- Supports assembly, construction and maintenance of chemical-industrial pilot plants and experimental systems.
- Supports operation of glass melters.
- Supports operation of air pollution control systems.
- Supports the operation of waste materials slurry preparations.
- Adheres to specific written Quality Assurance procedures for operations.
- Based on laboratory needs, individual training, and qualifications, duties may include.
- Assisting in the preparation of experiments and samples for these experiments.
- Checking and calibrating laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Adherence to specific laboratory procedures.
- Thorough collection of all necessary data and recording entries in the appropriate log books and/or database.
- Operation of bench-scale high-temperature furnaces.
- Processing of sludge, slurry, liquid and glass samples generated during experiments per written procedures.
- A college degree in a related field is desirable; Relevant work experience in melter operations or a related field may substitute for formal education
- VSL to provide current HAZWOPER qualification and Radiation Safety Training.
- Hands-on capabilities with a minimum experience of 1 year in general plumbing, construction, pipefitting, welding, and/or electrical wiring.
- Knowledge of electronic control systems preferred.
- Ability to read and follow technical schematic diagrams.
- Ability to collaborate with engineers and follow technical drawings and schematics.
- Experience in a machine shop is desirable.
- Ability to follow instructions for routine tests and projects.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment.
- Ability to work 8-12 hour shifts, including overnight and weekend shifts if required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Experience with high-temperature equipment is desirable.
- Ability to locate vendors nationwide and write order requisitions.
- Computer literacy and knowledge of data acquisition systems preferred.
