About the Job
Reports to the Practice Manager. Works with patients needing medication assistance. Assists patients in processing paperwork and ensures that they receive appropriate medications. Communicates with pharmaceutical companies regarding patient applications. Other responsibilities include transcription of patient medical information and other assigned typing duties using transcribing and word processing equipment.

Coordinates the Medical Assistance Program by:
- Working with the Physicians of the Family Practice Center to determine which patients are good candidates for the Medication Assistance Program.
- Assisting patients in gathering all necessary information for the processing of their applications for medication assistance.
- Communicating with pharmaceutical companies regarding patient applications to help them complete the process.
- Assisting patients in receiving all medications sent from pharmaceutical companies.
- Providing appropriate follow-up with patients.
Performs medical Transcriptionist functions following established medical record policies and procedures by:
- Typing and proofing histories, physicals, consults, operatives, test results or other medical information from physicians.
- Maintaining records of incoming and completed transcriptions, assuring chronological typing order and/or urgency.
- Typing meeting minutes, manuscripts, speeches, letters and other correspondence, as assigned.
- Transcribing special reports as requested, dispatching finished reports to appropriate parties, and maintaining production report of work.
- Working with medical assistants and other staff to route patient charts to proper location.
- Answering telephone and providing routine information in accordance with established procedures.
- Duplicating documents and forms as directed.
- Coordinating transcription completed by outside sources.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Attending required meetings and participating in committees as requested.
- Enhancing professional growth and development through in-service meetings and educational programs as approved.
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one year related office experience is required. Knowledge of medical terminology, coding and medical transcription experience is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively and maintain positive working relationships with staff, Physicians, patients and visitors.
- Requires knowledge of medical office procedures and medical terminology and anatomy in order to prepare and maintain detailed records, files, reports, and other correspondence.
- Demonstrates well developed telephone usage skills.
- Requires organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, pay close attention to details, prioritize workload, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Requires the analytical, organizational and office skills (i.e. filing, computer skills, interpret data) to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Demonstrates proficient typing skills of 60 wpm and the ability to use a transcriber and/or word processor.

Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to remain on feet and walk for long periods of time, ability to push wheelchairs and carts, to lift or pull patients or supplies, to provide CPR, etc. and to sit for long periods of time) to perform the essential functions of the position.
