POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, oversees routine aspects of the Parasitology, Mycology and Mycobacteriology areas within the Clinical Microbiology Labs. Functions as a specialist and educator in those areas, assisting with development and monitoring of quality assurance and identifying opportunities for improvement. Beyond mastery of standard laboratory protocol and methods, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theory and technical applications of clinical laboratory science and demonstrates thorough understanding of the clinical relevance of laboratory tests. Keeps abreast of field(s) of specialization by reading professional journals, attending lectures, conferences, seminars, and workshops. May assist in some supervisory duties, especially on weekends or in the absence of the supervisor. Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist II, including weekend and holiday rotations consistent with other technical staff work schedules.
**SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED** **:**
Under supervision of Clinical Microbiology supervisors with guidance from directors. When performing MT II duties, reports to the appropriate section supervisor.
**SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED** :
Functions as assistant supervisor on weekends, holidays and in absence of supervisor.
**EQUIPMENT USED** **:**
Standard and complex laboratory equipment, office equipment, and computer systems.
**TYPICAL DUTIES** **:**
1. Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist II, including weekend and holiday rotations consistent with other technical staff work schedules. (80%)
2. Additional duties (20%):
+ May train new employees, instruct residents and fellows, MT/MLT students, and other health professionals.
+ May act as a technical consultant to medical personnel and other laboratory staff regarding laboratory procedures and interpretation of technical aspects of tests.
+ Reviews laboratory reports and, using appropriate quality control protocols, makes decisions regarding laboratory results for accuracy, reliability, and clinical validity. Investigates problems/trouble shoots instruments and initiates solutions either independently or in consultation with supervisor, as situation warrants. Keeps supervisor apprised of problems and actions.
+ Assists in reviewing and writing procedure manuals so that they are up-to-date and functional.
+ May participate in developing and evaluating new methods and products. Initiates and maintains written and verbal communication with supervisors and directors regarding progress.
+ May assists in the data collection, preparation and analysis of laboratory statistics.
+ May oversee work performance of others in their area of expertise and provide supervision of routine laboratory operations in absence of supervisor, especially on weekends and reduced service shifts. Provides input for coworkers Performance Evaluations.
+ May assist with competency testing of staff.

3. Is able to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks.

**EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS** **:**
Must be NYS licensed in the Clinical Laboratory Technologist category. Bachelor's degree in MT or related discipline and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree in MT or related discipline and 2 years of relevant experience.

**Pay Range**
Pay Range: $36.50 - $47.45 Hourly

Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._
