Summary
Under general supervision of a qualified radiation oncologist and qualified medical physicist, performs a variety of treatment planning and quality assurance services related to radiation therapy. Constructs treatment plans that will meet the prescription written by the oncologist, ensuring that the patient will not lose important healthy organ function and that the radiation delivered will not affect healthy surrounding tissue. Participates in related research and the development of new radiation therapy procedures.
Minimum Job Requirements of a Medical Radiation Dosimetrist:
Current Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) accreditation or eligibility required. Candidates who have been eligible but are not certified for three or more years will not be considered. One year clinical dosimetry experience is preferred. Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Medical Radiation Dosimetrist:
- Generates patient treatment plans for all available treatment planning systems; views imaging data for positions and size of lesions, develops patient contours, creates and calculates a patient's treatment plan, evaluates the treatment plan’s adherence to prescribed dose constraints.
- Evaluates treatment plans for potential errors using established QA checklists. Evaluates existing QA checklists for applicability, accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the prescribed dose, document all pertinent information in the patient record and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations by an approved method.
- Communicates with the radiation therapists and assumes an advisory role in the implementation of the treatment plan, including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement and other treatment or imaging parameters.
- Participates in a patient’s treatment planning simulation. Supervises, performs, or assist in the planning, implementation and production of necessary immobilization devices and beam modifying devices.
- Supervises, performs or assists in simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging modalities including, but not limited to CT, MRI and PET.
- Supervises, performs or assists in the application of specific methods of patient and/or beam dosimetry as directed by the medical physicist in special procedures (SRS, SBRT, TSET, TBI, etc.).
- Participates in clinical and departmental research, including the development of new radiation therapy procedures, protocol adherence and submission, physics, retrospective studies, etc.
- Assists in the development of policy and procedures for treatment planning in an effort to improve both accuracy and efficiency in our treatment planning process.
- Participates in departmental performance quality improvement (PQI) studies in order to improve various aspects of clinical operations.
- Ensures all regulatory guidelines are followed, for example, protocol guidelines.
- Supervises or participates in the training and education of a variety students.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
