DescriptionThe Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Hennepin Healthcare Systems (HHS)/Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is seeking a highly motivated individual for a full-time on-site opportunity as Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry and Point-of-Care Testing.
This director will also oversee the laboratory located in our Emergency Department, Minnesota’s largest and busiest trauma center.
This role includes shared responsibility of specimen processing, send-outs, laboratory information system, and outreach departments as well as CLIA directorship of some of our system’s moderate and lower complexity laboratories.
This individual will work collaboratively with an Associate Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry as part of a dynamic leadership team.
The Director will have opportunities for research with the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute and an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota Medical School in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.Position Overview Conduct daily rounds in the HHS core laboratory and serve as a liaison and clinical consultant to internal and external stakeholders including medical staff, laboratory staff, learners, and administration Collaborate with the department chair, laboratory administrative director, managers, supervisors, and technical staff to monitor service performance and quality and to advise on issues affecting operationsConsult on test menus, appropriateness, clinical correlations and interpretations, utilization, quality, and new test developmentSupport and assist with coverage of our toxicology service, as needed Partner with HHS leadership in laboratory strategic planning, growth, marketing, research, and development.Assure that the laboratory sections are compliant with state, local, and federal regulations, licensing and accreditationPrepare and present educational information to medical and laboratory staff, including research and developmentParticipate in curriculum development, teaching, and mentorship for medical students, residents, and fellows from HHS and the University of Minnesota About the DepartmentOur collegial medical team consists of three Clinical Laboratory Medical Directors and nine Clinical and Anatomic Pathologists who are mission drivenOur hospital and laboratories are accredited by College of American Pathologists including Forensic Urine Drug Testing, the Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the American Association for the Advancement of Blood & BiotherapiesOur laboratory is focused on education, providing training for medical, pathology, and clinical chemistry students, residents, and fellows, medical laboratory technologists and scientists, histotechnicians, cytotechnologists, and phlebotomistsQualificationsQUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications:Formal training in clinical chemistry with a PhD or MD degree requiredPhD candidates should be board certified or eligible by ABCC (American Board of Clinical Chemistry) in Clinical ChemistryMD candidates should be board certified or eligible in Chemical Pathology or ABCC (American Board of Clinical Chemistry) in Clinical Chemistry Preferred Qualifications:Experience in laboratory directorship including method development and performance evaluation of instrumentation including automated chemistry, immunoassays, and POC testingEligibility to serve as Program Director for our Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry fellowshipKnowledge / Skills / Abilities:Ability to lead and teach in a laboratory setting including excellent communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work collaboratively and build positive relationshipsAbility to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize scheduling of work, and determine appropriate course of action in complex situationsAbility to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely mannerAbility to handle challenging situations involving patients, providers, or other staff in a professional mannerKnowledge of research methodologies and grant fundingMust demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, and ethnic backgroundsJob Level: DirectorEmployee Status: Regular
