THE OPPORTUNITY
UChicago Student Wellness seeks an innovative and collaborative physician leader to serve as Medical Director. The ideal Medical Director will be a systems thinker and engaged problem solver with the experience, skills, and insight to guide Student Wellness in adapting its structure and practices to provide superb holistic care and become one of the best university medical services in the nation.
Student Wellness, comprising Medical Services, Mental Health, and Health Promotion, moved into a state-of-the-art facility in 2020. Leaders and staff of Student Wellness are charged with developing strategies to develop care that is truly integrative, student-centered, and excellent. The incoming Medical Director will be a skilled and passionate leader drawn to the opportunity to build on a solid foundation of clinical care, to champion change, and to lead clinical innovation in a welcoming, dynamic, mission-driven environment.
THE POSITION
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Wellness (AVP), the Medical Director will partner with the AVP in shaping and defining the vision for Medical Services within Student Wellness and developing initiatives and structures to support that vision. The Medical Director is a vital member of the Student Wellness leadership team, collaborating across functions and offering guidance to campus partners.
The position oversees 9 FTE primary care providers, including MDs, DOs, and NP/APPs, as well as clinical leadership and nursing teams. The medical service has relationships with specialists at UChicago Medicine to provide sports medicine, gynecology, and pediatric care in addition to point-of-care testing and laboratory services. The Medical Director will provide strong administrative and clinical supervision, ensuring a culture of continuous quality improvement and care, and the skillful management of resources. In addition, they provide oversight for the Medical Services' ~20 clinical and non-clinical staff. Approximately 70% of the of time will be directed toward administrative activities; 30% will be clinical.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished physician leader, board certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or a related specialty, with a record of innovative problem-solving, commitment to culturally sensitive care, and the skills to navigate gracefully through a highly de-centralized academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
- Must hold either a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited medical school, along with current board certification in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, or a related specialty.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possess a valid medical license to practice in Illinois or demonstrate the capability to obtain such a license within six months of hire.
- Able to meet the credentialing standards set by the Medical Staff Office and maintain medical privileges at UChicago Medicine.
Experience:
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in a clinical setting.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience leading clinical and/or administrative operations required, with a demonstrated ability to lead a medical practice. 7-10 years of such leadership experience is strongly preferred.

- Temperament and experience to work effectively with students, and to understand their unique healthcare needs and issues.
- Persuasive and engaging communicator, able to guide staff in creating a clinical environment that adheres to the highest standards while upholding a culture of mutual respect and trust.
- Maturity, presence, and gravitas to engage effectively with all constituencies, including members of the faculty and students; communicate broadly across the University and work across boundaries; cultivate collegial relationships.
- Drive and intellectual curiosity; a good sense of humor.
- Ability to plan strategically, to identify what is needed for the short and long-term success of the University, and to bring these ideas to fruition. Facility with data management and tools of assessment.
