Overview
Halifax Health is seeking a Medical Coding Intern for our Registered Apprenticeship Program.
Summary
The Medical Coding Intern is part of the Halifax Health Registered Apprenticeship Program. This individual will be responsible for completing on-the-job training and related technical instruction intended to prepare them for transition into a Coding Specialist role upon successful completion of the program. In this position, the Medical Coding intern will learn, perform, and master tasks that include medical records assessments, charging, and medical coding. The individual in this role will also enroll in and complete courses including but not limited to: CPT Coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Disease Pathology that are required to pass the CPC or CPC-A exam.
Job Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Interest in Medical Coding and obtaining the CPC, CPC-A, and other technical certifications
General knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the medical coding field, as well as a willingness to continue education for professional growth.
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong time management and prioritization skills
Must be meticulous and thorough
High level of organization, attention to detail, and responsiveness required
Proven success performing tasks with multiple elements (person-to-person communication, paperwork, electronic entry)
Demonstrated discretion concerning confidential information
Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Some medical coding knowledge or coursework preferred
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Explain various types of hospital visits seen at Halifax Health
- Identify elements of complete medical record
- Identify steps of Charging process
- Demonstrate ability to monitor all pended accounts for ED CHARGE, ED CODING and Recurring Account teams and notify coders when account is ready to be coded.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Excel spreadsheets.
- Identify missing items, i.e. missing loose filing, i.e. Trauma Flow sheets, Anesthesia records, OB-ED charge sheets.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate and work with other departments to obtain missing documentation and charges.
- Identify deficiencies, i.e. missing procedure notes, dictation/dictation drafts
- Demonstrate ability to correctly verify Lab and Orthopedic supply charges and understand edits
- Identify missing Admit orders, History and Physicals, missing Operative reports and Discharge Summaries. Notify HIM department Analyst
- Demonstrate ability to accurately Charge ED Accounts
- Demonstrate ability to accurately Charge ED Admitted Accounts
- Understands reporting of ED Evaluation and Management services in the facility setting.
- Use and maintain electronic applications and work processes to support clinical classifications and coding, encoding and grouping software.
- Demonstrate ability to accurately apply CPT and ICD-10-CM codes to ER accounts.
- Understands application of modifiers and edits in the facility setting.
- Other duties as assigned.
