GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provides professional medical care under supervision for clinic patients.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports directly to Practice Manager/Director of Practice Management.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Duties performed in this position include but are not limited to the following:
4. Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs
a. Obtains vital signs (height, weight, BP, pulse, oxygen level)
b. Reviews and updates medical hx, surgery hx, social hx, family hx, and advanced directives
c. Completes medication reconciliation (verifies medication, dosage and instructions)
d. Verifies patient pharmacy
e. Completes depression and fall screenings at appropriate times
5. Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
6. Gives injections and applies dressings as required.
a. Obtains and runs testing as ordered (urine dip, glucose, EKG, PT/INR,
urine drug screen, blood work, urine pregnancy, rapid strep, rapid influenza)
7. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments.
8. Performs nurse visits – including education of physician’s orders to patient and proper charting after visit.
17. Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
18.Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
21.Stocks and cleans rooms in between patients, end of day and as needed.
22.Completes end of day check list and provides to office lead
KNOW HOW: Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of EMR. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill in taking and recording accurate vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standard. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Some exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
SPECIAL FACTORS: Some overtime hours may be required to assist physician/providers in patient care.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
Must have knowledge of medical practice and in giving patient care. Must be knowledgeable about examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment room procedures. The position requires a person who is tactful, understanding, and sympathetic in his/her relationship with the patient. He/she must have the ability to recognize serious problems when triaging calls and to know how to get the patient serviced in a timely fashion using the resources available. He/she must have working knowledge of record keeping requirements both medical and administrative.
Problem Solving: Judgement is required when dealing with the different personalities of both patients and the medical staff. The CMA/RMA’s duties are almost always performed within previously established policies/guidelines and physician or nurse practitioner/nurse working relationships. The CMA/RMA may work independently at times or under the direct supervision of the physician, nurse practitioner, clinical lead or practice manager. Depending upon their nature, difficult or unusual problems can be referred to the clinical lead, nurse practitioner, the physician or the practice manager.
Accountability: The CMA/RMA is accountable for all care that he/she renders to the patient or should have rendered to the patient and the chart documentation. The CMA/RMA must follow the physician’s instructions explicitly when providing care of any kind to patients. The CMA/RMA is responsible for dealing with patients in a friendly and cooperative manner. The CMA/RMA must make accurate decisions regarding the potential severity of problems telephoned to him/her by patients and must consult the physician in a timely fashion regarding those problems. The CMA/RMA is required to use supplies and materials only as needed to avoid wasting supplies and materials. The CMA/RMA is also required to see if other departments can use supplies not yet used that are close to expiration. The outpatient/ambulatory nurse is an integral part of patient care.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting Program with certification/registration.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSE: Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants or equivalent
