Primary function of a Mechanical Superintendent: Provide overall administrative and technical direction for one large, complex project. Individual directs several areas of a larger project with subordinate managers. Responsible for all facets of mechanical construction including manpower assessment and hiring, material take-off assistance, procurement of materials, schedule development and management, and assisting in cost control management with the Division office. Responsible for rental equipment management, co-ordination of subcontractors, and implementation of both that safety and the Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs.
On smaller projects, primary functions remain the same except there likely are no subordinate managers, and the individual would do hands-on work including, but not limited to, cutting, fitting, welding, equipment setting, equipment erection, equipment operation etc. Individual would be directly involved in the installation of the work being performed.
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
Safety
+ Coordinate and monitor craft compliance with all safety requirements (OSHA, state, local, client, and Crowder). Document and ensure corrective measures are implemented.
+ Examine and inspect all work areas and equipment being used to verify compliance with the site safety program, pre-construction Job Safety Analysis reports, and Pre-task Planning sheets posted for each area of construction.
+ Immediately address any safety issue observed or brought to your attention by anyone.
+ Read, review, study and implement Crowder Construction Company’s Safety Procedure Manual.
+ Ensure that Safety Meetings are held on a weekly basis.
Project Execution & Paperwork
+ Participate in the estimating hand-off meeting of the project to the construction team.
+ Participate in project storyboard planning sessions and assist in the critical path schedule implementation. . This planning includes, but is not limited to, methods of construction, job safety analysis planning, material procurement schedules, rental equipment requirements and scheduling, subcontractor review and scheduling of same, site material and logistics strategy, and manloading of the schedule to meet the project requirements.
+ Sign-off on the overall project schedule when completed.
+ Implement the overall project schedule with all direct reports with daily follow-ups, weekly reporting, and development of three week look-ahead schedules.
+ Manage of all phases of the overall project schedule with owner, engineers, subcontractors, vendors and staffing.
+ Procure staff, implement schedule, and supervise craft foremen and craft activities. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring all staff on the project teams are installing work in compliance with all project and owner specifications. Monitor and managing manloading requirements of the project in direct relationship with the overall project schedules and requirements.
+ Make all of the necessary equipment, tools and materials available per the project documents to complete the project as scheduled.
+ Participate in all construction meetings with the owner, architect, and engineering teams.
+ Communicate with and direct supervisory personnel and subcontractors in reviewing project status to monitor compliance with project specifications of work being installed and schedule updates to confirm project status against the overall construction schedule.
+ Order procurement of tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.
+ Maintain an effective inventory control procedure for all materials and tools.
+ Maintain communication with other departments (i.e. safety, materials control, purchasing, QA/QC, and engineering) to ensure all required materials, equipment, inspection, etc., to support craft activities and project schedule.
+ Interpret and understand all subcontracts and scope of work to be performed.
+ Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.
Personnel
+ Assign work to crews and coordinate with each as to not interfere with other work activities, including owner representatives and inspectors.
+ May direct workers concerned with major maintenance projects for existing structures.
+ Show understanding of, and commitment to, Crowder Construction Company’s EEO and affirmative action policies in all phases of employment.
+ Initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers and hires.
+ Handle employee concerns and complaints, conflicts, and performance concerns.
Quality and Production
+ Immediately address any and all quality or production issues.
+ Confer with supervisory and engineering personnel and inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods including but not limited to design, lack of productivity, and work interfaces.
+ Inspect work in progress to insure consistency in workmanship and specifications.
+ Responsible correct initial completion of work by crew.
+ Maintain a high level of professional ethics and demand the same of all employees.
Paperwork
+ Complete Daily Superintendent Reports, review and sign all foremen time sheets, new hire application packages, maintain equipment logs, labor reports, and receiving reports.
+ Understand budgeting process and maintain labor and equipment costs within budget.
+ Maintain all project documentation and schedules for assigned task
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:
+ Minimum 1 year experience as a WTP/WWTP mechanical superintendent or a minimum five years comparable experience required in mechanical construction including supervision, technology, methods, equipment, tools, and work procedures.
+ Leadership and communication skills are essential.
+ Knowledge of:
+ Installation and repair of Pump installation, aeration equipment, clarifier equipment, flange pipe, underground pipe and manholes.
+ Cutting, welding, steel pipe installation.
+ Construction inspection methods.
+ Building, repairing, installing boilers
+ Must hold a valid, non-restrictive driver’s license.
