The purpose of the Lab Technician is to support the functions of the Product Engineering Laboratory. These functions include conducting dynamic wear and fatigue strength tests on automotive timing chains, maintaining the test equipment and facilities, providing end of test examinations of timing drive system components, submitting reports for tests and examinations, instrumenting and calibration timing drive test hardware.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities of this job are included but not limited to this job description – other tasks may be assigned and expected to be performed.
- Set up & run dynamic tests of automotive timing chains to confirm performance and improve our products. Complete all data sheets & follow test procedures. Write reports using the test results. Keep spare parts on hand. Maintain test machines and manage inventory of consumables and spares.
- Assist with completion of Engineering Work Orders and related tasks as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor. This will include product examination, test set-ups, running tests, test data review, and technical writing of reports
- Assure the Lab facility is neat, clean, and presentable to internal and external customers at all times. This includes and is not limited to sweeping/mopping floors, washing walls, and removing trash.
- Support Product Engineering staff with miscellaneous assignments. This will include benchmark activity, support of prototype preparations, fixture fabrication, instrumentation and calibration of test parts, and other miscellaneous technical assistance.
- Become familiar with UST products and testing methods.
- Learn the fit and function of high-speed chain drive systems, which include chains, sprockets, guides, and tensioners.
- Associate's Degree (A.A) or equivalent from two-year college/technical school, or more
- 3-5 years of related experience preferred
- Use of personal computer (Windows operating system)
- Use of mechanics tools including torque wrenches, bearing separators, etc.
- Transducer calibration, linear scaling, engineering units
- Use of Microsoft office software (Excel, Outlook, Teams)
- Use of digital multi-meter
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Judgment of an unsafe condition
- Understanding of internal combustion 4-stroke engines
- Ability to operate machining tools
- Judgment of product condition
- Ability to work in a team
- Use of digital photography equipment
