JOB SUMMARY:
This position will be responsible for engineering activities in support of power generator service, repair and electrical testing work. The job will require working closely with shop operations, field operations and project management personnel to execute customer service projects. This position will involve all aspects of generator service including technical evaluation of generators, evaluation of generator components, the development of generator repairs, and the determination of applicable maintenance or corrective measures. These efforts are all targeted to help our customers operate their generator properly or return them to serviceable condition.
Hands on work, in support of project execution and in close cooperation with other company operations and customers, is expected. Position requires direct engineering support of projects at customer sites and within the Toshiba West Allis, WI shop as assigned. Additionally, this position will be responsible for participation in bidding and proposal information development. This position will represent Toshiba Engineering capability to customers through service project work as well as marketing and sales support activities.
Position also requires managing and maintaining generator product data for service of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM - Toshiba) fleet. This will involve technical collaboration with Toshiba Product Center regarding the development and deployment of product improvements and technical issue resolution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Common Functions:
- Resolve technically difficult and challenging service project problems including identification of pertinent details, with the support of a senior engineer as needed.
- Coordinate and execute technical projects working with other departments to provide analysis, technical support, and repair solutions. This may be done in the support of sales, proposal development, execution of service work, or for other needs.
- Establish and implement technical solutions and influence agreement across multiple stakeholders.
- Provide follow-up throughout the process to ensure objectives are being met.
- Represents Toshiba to customers regarding technical aspects of existing services.
· Present solutions and evaluations to the customer and engage in customer discussions regarding their technical service engineering problems.
- Evaluate service options and engage in technical discussions concerning risk assessment with more senior engineers.
- Participate in the creation of departmental budgets.
Engineering Functions:
As a Mid-Level Generator Engineer the candidate must be able to work with minimal direction in the following areas:
- Review of customers request for quotation to determine Toshiba’s technical ability based on established Toshiba’s capabilities and preliminary evaluation of risk (under the guidance and direction of senior staff).
- Assist in creating inspection & test work scopes and direct data collection as needed to perform condition assessment or diagnose equipment problems. This includes development of scopes to evaluate mechanical assemblies.
- Evaluate data by applying existing or industry acceptance criteria. Assist in development of new acceptance where needed.
- Design and development of parts and repairs (under the guidance of more senior staff as needed). This includes specifying how to mechanically repair components to return them to serviceable condition and design of new parts.
- Identification of materials used in utility generators and application of acceptable substitutes in accordance to established standards.
- Assist Toshiba’s purchasing in researching vendors in the technical review of qualification and capabilities.
TRAVEL:
Limited domestic travel as needed. Potential international travel (to Japan) for possible assignment or training opportunities. (Position requires ability to maintain valid passport.)
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience:
- 5 years engineering experience. Experience in the power generation industry preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in Engineering of high voltage / high current AC and DC power equipment, other industry utilizing large rotating apparatus, or power plant/generation.
Skills:
- Above average verbal and written communications skills including experience in procedure and process documentation and technical report writing.
- Ability to deliver technical presentations to customers required.
- Knowledgeable about Toshiba’s base technical and commercial offerings with a deeper understanding of product origins and applicability.
Ability to solve complex problems and execute on the solution
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point) required.
- Knowledge of document management concepts and computer based document management systems is required. Familiarity with Microsoft Project 2000 desired.
- Familiarity with and application of AutoCAD and SolidWorks for design, MathCAD and COSMOS-M (finite element program) analysis is preferred
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Bachelor's Level Degree required
4-year degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

- The employee may occasionally need to work at times beyond standard office hours to support shop and site engineering needs.
- Employee may need to physically inspect large equipment which may require the use of scaffolds or ladders to access locations above 6’ or may have to contort and enter into small areas for the purpose of inspecting the generation equipment.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to support limited domestic travel requirements and possess valid drivers’ license
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- The majority of this work takes place in an office environment.
- Engineering support for Toshiba shop projects often involve interaction with personnel in the shop where he/she may be exposed to variations in temperature and periodic exposure to loud noises.
- On occasion the employee may travel to a customer site (power plant) where he/she may be exposed to extremes in temperature and where the environment is frequently loud.
