Department Summary
The Transmission Pipeline & Storage Engineering (TPSE) team has overall responsibility for engineering and design, execution and closeout associated with the Asset Relocation Transmission funding program involving natural gas transmission pipelines. Additionally, TPSE conducts engineering and design, execution and closeout for projects in support of Gas Storage Engineering within natural gas storage facilities. The team is also responsible for maintaining standard work/process documentation and specifications, developing new processes and conducting structured problem solving/process improvement initiatives.
Job Description
As a member of the team, the Mechanical Engineer assists in the development, design and execution of new capital asset installations. The incumbent works on a team with other engineers and technicians on moderately complex projects to ensure that their projects meet all relevant safety standards and specifications.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Designing, maintaining, implementing or improving mechanical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, products or systems
- Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
- Collaborate with customers, coworkers and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects
- Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing mechanical specifications and technical drawings
- Establishing construction, manufacturing or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
- Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential mechanical engineering projects and studies
- Preparing specifications for purchases of mechanical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor or construction costs for budget preparation
- Other non-essential dues as assigned or may be necessary
- Analytical and problem-solving skills; mechanical and technical skills
- Proficient with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook) and Bentley ProjectWise with aptitude for learning new software
- Experience with computer-assisted design (CAD) software
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Knowledge of the design, construction or operation of natural gas transmission facilities; familiarity of 49 CFR Part 192 Transportation of Natural Gas and Other Gas by Pipeline: Minimum Federal Safety Standards, ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission & Distribution Piping Systems and the Michigan Gas Safety Standards
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
