Job Definition and Purpose:
- Responsible for preparing preliminary drawings of plant layouts; creates hand sketched guides to assist design staff who prepare detailed drawings; creates detailed drawings from reference drawings and trains/supervises designers and CAD technicians; acts as lead designer for specific project(s).
- The Mechanical Designer must be knowledgeable regarding company and department CADD and drawing standards and procedures, and must have a good understanding of all required mechanical calculations.
- The ability to sketch guides showing what is expected when detailed drawings are completed, is a requirement in this position. This individual works under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Department Manager representing the Mechanical Department as the "Project Team Member " and participates in all phases of the mechanical arrangement and details.
- The individual in this position coordinates and works closely with the Project Manager to ensure the success of the project.
- The Mechanical Designer is required to visit the project sites regularly, and may spend days or weeks on site, requiring the ability to climb ladders and stairs, and to kneel, bend and stoop to check the location of conduits and take measurements in a hot/cold, dusty environment.
- The position requires proficient keyboard skills with extended periods of six to eight hours, sitting and repetitively entering data into a computer with intense attention to the computer screen.
- Lifting on the job is generally limited to lifting/moving stick files and to using equipment in the field; generally the lifting requirements will not exceed 30 lbs.
- Good coordination and communication skills are required to interact with personnel from other departments, to train and supervise staff, and to ensure efficient and accurate preparation of drawings to meet the client's objectives.
- The Mechanical Designer is the senior most Designer in the Mechanical Department at PENTA Engineering Corporation.
- The Mechanical Designer has a minimum of 10 – 15 years of direct Cement and/or Lime Plant design experience within the Mechanical Department.
- Working with the Mechanical Department Manager, the Mechanical Designer is fully involved in updating and revising the Mechanical Department's drawing CADD standards, specifications, and procedures.
- Plans work and general arrangements for mechanical team members and directs design staff to ensure quality of finished drawings; anticipates and reports Client requirements to project managers and department managers.
- Makes concept arrangements of processing and service facilities, piping schematics and details, flow diagrams, sketches for specifications and clarifications.
- Maintains records to compare actual time spent on each drawing to budgeted time; responsible for controlling scope and budget for mechanical portion of the project.
- Verifies that all corrections made to drawings are correct, and checks drawing revisions made by others
- Communicates directly with clients, to answer questions, to discuss changes, etc.; maintains records of all communication with clients and others participating on the project; documents all discussions and changes; maintains master files and personal files related to the project(s).
- Attends regular project review meetings and other meetings with staff and clients to resolveissues that surface as the project progresses.
- Provides input for proposals are regarding number of drawings required, time needed to complete drawings and cost of drawings; makes design recommendations.
- Constantly updates knowledge of technology in the field to keep abreast of changes and new developments, methods and procedures.
- Assists in marketing company expertise and services.
- Associate Degree in the Engineering Science or equivalent college coursework in Algebra, Trig, Physics, Statistics, Analytical Geometry, with training in CADD.
- 15 or more years experience using CADD to produce mechanical drawings.
- Proficient with AutoCad Revit 3D and Navisworks Software or the ability to learn this software.
- Experience in plant engineering/maintenance department is helpful.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate work with other project team members.
- Strong organization skills to effectively manage time and resources in the most efficient manner.
