POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor, the Mechanic is a non- exempt position under FLSA. Among other duties this position repairs and maintains equipment and performs routine manual work in the maintenance of county roads by operating light and heavy equipment. The Mechanic assists in snow removal and mowing when needed. This position also provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):
- Regular and dependable attendance.
- Performs welding of equipment and repair of equipment.
- Identifies and performs repairs and maintenance on all vehicles and equipment, including small pieces of equipment and tools.
- Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes, fluid, and hose replacements.
- Oversees maintenance of equipment at off-site shops.
- Works on diagnosing problems and resolves them in the most economical manner.
- Changes and/or repairs tires.
- Operates and performs spray painting.
- Cleans shop area and tools, and stores tools in appropriate location.
- Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment.
- Inspects equipment for problems other than those reported by individual operators.
- Operate electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Operates equipment such as a tandem truck, semi-tractor trailer, or front-end loader in the transportation of materials and heavy equipment when needed.
- Assists in snow and ice removal operations when needed.
- Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL, a clean driving record, and the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Kansas. If current Class A CDL does not have tanker endorsement, tanker endorsement shall be obtained within 120 days of employment.
Must have and maintain a clean driving record for this position. A “clean” record is defined as: No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (such as but not limited to DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) traffic infractions (such as but not limited to speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one year old.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares equipment for extreme weather conditions.
- Performs mower prep for mowing, winter prep on sanders, and black top prep for black topping.
- Operates all vehicle servicing tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
- Ability to operate various types of diagnostic equipment, including standard office equipment,
computer, etc.
- Ability to operate all public works equipment, including but not limited to: motor grader, dozer, loader, roadside mowers, trucks, and other related equipment. Other equipment as assigned.
- Ability to use two-way radios, computer, fax machine, measuring tapes, levels, hand tools, power tools, and other machinery.
- Knowledge in performing effective and efficient repairs on trucks, tractors, and all related construction equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair vehicles, equipment, and other mechanical issues.
- Ability to use GPS and GIS data relating to county landmarks, roads, etc.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with others.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of road and bridge construction and maintenance.
- Ability to interpret technical data, maps, construction plans, charts, and diagrams.
- Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, warning labels, etc.
PROBLEM SOLVING: The employee is assigned recurring and routine tasks. Deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations are reviewed for options before being referred to the Public Works Administrator or his/her designee. The Mechanic may make and/or dispense daily assignments defining the workday for staff. Requires the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; and the ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by others calmly and respectfully. Employee must be able to define problems and deal with a variety of situations while thinking quickly, maintaining self-control, and adapting to stressful situations. Must have and exhibit the ability to use good judgment and effectively solve problems.
SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY: This position works with supervision from the Geary County Shop Supervisor. This employee has no supervisory responsibilities over other personnel. Employee is directly responsible for departmental equipment and resources. Employee is responsible for daily record keeping, such as time worked, tasks assigned, locations, and material used for cost accounting purposes.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of construction and/or heavy equipment and machinery. A combination of education and experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be accepted. Must be able to obtain a Class C Underground Storage Tank Certification within six (6) months of employment. Must have and maintain certification in automotive air conditioning – or must obtain and maintain automotive air conditioning certification within 90 days of employment. Vocational training in mechanics may be substituted for the required experience.
