About the Job
Primary Purpose:
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as support and assistance to the district’s transportation mechanic.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
CDL License
TEA School Bus Certification
Clean Driver’s License
Preferred ASE
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Analyzing technical diagrams and schematics
Problem-solving and critical thinking to diagnose issues Follow detailed repair procedures
Attention to detail to ensure proper repairs
Experience:
2 years of experience as a mechanic
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair
- Assumes responsibility for tools, equipment, and materials assigned to him/her.
- Retrieves vehicles for repair in the most expeditious manner.
- Performs maintenance work under the supervision of other mechanics.
- Maintains work area clean and safe.
- Performs bus driving duties as required.
- Exercises dependability, punctuality, and reliability in the performance of assigned duties.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of SISD safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
- Provides optimal customer service to all students, employees, parents, community, members, and any other stakeholders of the district.
OTHER
• Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
• Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
• Work irregular hours as needed.
• Serve as substitute bus driver as needed.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Lifting heavy components like engines, transmissions, and axles
- Crawling under buses to access repair areas
- Bending, kneeling, and reaching to access tight spaces
- Standing for long periods while working on repairs
- Hand dexterity to operate various tools and equipment to supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.
Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical and non-electrical tools related to repairs.
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Frequent bending, squatting, standing, lifting, walking, carrying and reaching.
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over)
Environment: Working outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposure to grease, oil, and other automotive fluids. Noise from machinery and running buses. Confined spaces within the bus engine compartment. Potential exposure to fumes and chemicals.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. Communicate effectively.
