Responsibilities
- Composite material formulation development and evaluation
- Organize and track incoming material for development
- Perform material configuration DOEs to achieve cosmetic and structural performance targets defined by each program
- Perform process DOEs to determine optimal thermal profiles for thermoplastic composite insert over molding
- Fabricate laminates from developmental formulations of composite prepregs made with recycled carbon fiber and other recycled/chopped fiber fillers. Measure cosmetic, mechanical, and physical properties of materials.
- Perform material DOEs involving fabricating test panels using high-thermal conductivity reinforcements and fillers. Prepare specimens for testing. Measure structural and thermal performance. Consolidate results.
- Report results of DOEs and tests.
- Develop molding guidelines based on results of material and process DOEs
Requirements
- Background in composite materials and processing
- Experience using autoclave and press-molding to manufacture composite parts
- Direct experience processing both thermoset and thermoplastic composites
- Trained in experimental design and data analysis
- Skilled in developing detailed experimental plans based on high-level requirements
- Experienced in running common laboratory equipment, including specimen cutting, polishing, microscopy, surface profilometry, mechanical testing using a universal testing machine, DMA/DSC, TMA
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- A minimum B.S. in Materials Science or related field
- 3+ years hands-on material/process engineering experience in composites.
