Material Laboratory Technician, Automotive - Onsite (Lockport, NY) at Mahle Engine Components Usa, Inc.

Your Contribution

As a Materials Laboratory Technician, you will perform advanced measurement of MAHLE components, all routine and non-routine metallographic sample preparation, Chemical analysis, physical and mechanical testing, tabulation of measurement data into formal formats and assists Materials, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering on special projects. 

• Operates in the day-to-day work under the Laboratory Scope and Capabilities.

• Able to show competence on advance measurement and analysis equipment.

• Utilize and understand the established work order system to maintain and track work.

• Works with other staff members on activities such as inventories and ordering routine laboratory supplies including hardness test blocks, chemicals, polishing supplies, and other lab supplies.

• Understand and assist in updating/revising of respective laboratory instructions for new methods and capabilities.

• Operates and maintains physical testing, metallographic preparation, and support equipment in the laboratory including specialized measuring and testing equipment (surface finish, fatigue testers, tensile tests, ovens), abrasive cut-off saws, mounting presses, Brinell and Rockwell hardness testers, micro hardness tester, manual and automatic metallographic polishing machines, chemicals, and cleaning processes. 

• Prepares samples and/or specific parts to specified tolerances, samples and tests according to ASTM and/or other print specifications (Customer & MAHLE standards)

• Performs routine and non-routine metallographic preparation and imaging (Microscopic) of all materials submitted to the laboratory.

• Understands and familiar with Chemistry titrations, chemistry of elements.

• Communicates and assists Engineers on special projects and testing and aids in the form of correct sample preparation, new testing, and measurement techniques.

• Maintains laboratory storage files for all metallurgical mounts and samples in accordance with company policy 

• Maintains accurate records, develops spreadsheets, enters data into computer and generates reports.

• Measures, inspects, and records mechanical and physical properties, as well as the visual appearance of all evaluated components before and after testing.

• Maintains a complete working knowledge of measurement equipment for test pieces and related items

• Performs other related duties as may be required or assigned to maintain the operation of Labs Department at its highest possible level of efficiency, effectiveness, and cleanliness.

• Complies with all company policies, procedures, safety guidelines and standards.

• Maintain awareness of, and meet, the requirements of the MAHLE Quality System.

• Must have good communication with supervisor, customers, and other staff to support a cohesive work environment.

Your Experience & Qualifications

• Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 1+ years of related experience and/or training

• Experience in materials science, metallurgy, machining, or metrology is preferred

• Automotive technician, repair or ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification is a plus 

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume

• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
