Overview:
Set up and operate two gear grinding (Kapp Niles with Siemens controllers is preferred) machines to produce rough and finish ground splines, and gears (spur, helical, and double helical). Preferred experience includes hobbing and shaping machines as well.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate gear grinding machines and associated wheel dress and balancing equipment as per specific instructions. (60% of the role)
- Use various hand tools, gauges, and dial indicators to install involute cams, yokes, arbors, and workpieces.
- Use optical equipment to present wheel dresser tools, balance and dress wheels as required, indicate workpieces between bench centers before loading into the grinder, and make necessary adjustments and calculations to meet quality standards. (20% of the role)
- Inspect and record workpiece pitch and root diameters prior to grinding, monitor machine operations, check finished parts, and verify dimensional accuracy.
- Visually inspect parts for finish, root, profile, and identify any signs of surface burn or tempering. (10-15% of the role)
- Maintain records of finished dimensions and obtain inspection acceptance of finished parts.
- Perform other related tasks at a comparable or lower skill level related to gear machining, including checking work from other operators when necessary.
- Complete operator checklists as required and adhere to all environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) procedures.
- Segregate waste materials and maintain good housekeeping practices as needed.
- May be assigned additional tasks within the scope and skill level of the position to support departmental objectives and develop individual skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Ability to make calculations involving shop mathematics and handbook formulas, including algebra and trigonometry.
- Proficient with precision instruments such as dial indicators, blade and ball micrometers, height gauges, and gear measuring wires.
- Equivalent to 2 years of high school education plus 2 to 3 years of trades training.
- 1 to 2 years of relevant experience.
- May require second or third shift work.
