About the Job
We are seeking a full-time Marine Surveyor to join our survey team. In this role, you will be responsible for the field acquisition, processing, and cleaning of multibeam hydrographic survey data as well as towing, launching, operating, docking, and recovering a vessel and participating in and executing quality assurance processes on data collected to assure the standards of Garmin products.
This selected individual can be located anywhere in the continental United Sates provided you are near a major airport. You will typically travel in 2 week shifts for surveying and return home for 2 weeks to work to clean and prepare the data for the production environment. From there you will travel back out again to survey and so on.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the transport, launch, and recovery of vessel on various bodies of water across the United States using bathymetric acquisition equipment and utilizing Garmin survey techniques (sometimes up to 8 hours a day)
- Use hydrographic software to collect, analyze and interpret bathymetric data; conduct post-processing of raw bathymetric data collected during field acquisition and clean post-processed data using third-party software
- Operate/navigate vessel while simultaneously running bathymetric survey equipment and software
- Perform basic maintenance to vessel, engines and generators using established Garmin Survey Team guidelines
- Collect Points of Interest (POI) points and photos while on the water and host/categorize them during post-processing of data
- Identify, troubleshoot and communicate issues to Leadership or peers in a timely manner while in the field and office: mechanical, electronic, software, weather, etc.
- Organize/document data for seamless transition to final production
- Provide post-trip constructive feedback and recommendations; ensure expense reports and other requested information are submitted in a timely manner
- Learn, understand, and apply established processes to daily tasks
- Maintain and adhere to DOT guidelines while in the field and in the office, including the E-Log duty status system
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of hydrographic survey equipment including calibration and operation of tools
- Perform basic troubleshooting and grow knowledge of how to identify and fix marine engine malfunctions to restore to operating condition
- Execute tasks as directed by Leadership or mentor
- Function both as an effective team member and as an independent professional
- Travel up to 50% (inland U.S and coastal), typically in two-week rotations
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in cartography, geography, hydrography, oceanography, or related field OR a minimum of 4 years experience performing bathymetric surveys using multibeam systems and RTK positioning equipment or a role substantially similar to the essential functions of this job description
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations to successfully operate Garmin vehicles safely, must have knowledge of all city, federal, and state traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in motor vehicle operation
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen and physical for DOT regulated position
- Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions
- Able to lift as much as 55 pounds while using safe lifting techniques
- Must possess a basic working knowledge and understanding of hydrography or bathymetric survey principles relevant to Garmin business needs
- Basic ability to operate equipment in the field for surveying and software in the office for post-processing, hosting, and cleaning
- Previous experience in the operation and maintenance of generators, engines, marine electronics, towing and operating vessels is ideal
- Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work proactively and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Proficient computer skills - familiarity with PC applications and Windows Operating System (OS)
- Good interpersonal and technical communication skills
- Able to work in a collaborative team environment to achieve goals
- Travel up to 50% (inland U.S and coastal), typically in two-week rotations
Desired Qualifications
- Possesses in-land and coastal boating experience
- Possesses a fundamental understanding of Garmin's Survey process
- USGS Captain’s License (OUPV/6-Pack), Merchant Marine Master or Uninspected Passenger Vessel Operator license
- Extensive experience in maintenance and operation of small boats and trailering operations
- Ability to read and understand tide, current and weather conditions and effect on navigation and safety
- Experience with Kongsberg multibeam systems
- Experience using Qinsy acquisition software
- Experience using Qimera data processing software
- Experience using Beamworx Autoclean data processing software
