Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Tooling Development: Lead the sourcing, design, construction, and launch of new tools, fixtures, and equipment for CNC machining, welded components, and assembly processes for both new and existing programs.
Problem Solving: Provide technical support to Tool-Room personnel and external vendors, resolving issues related to production processes, tool tryouts, and program launches.
Project Management: Estimate, schedule, and execute engineering changes related to tooling and cost-saving initiatives. Coordinate changes with cross-functional teams, including Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Finance, ensuring seamless phase-ins and production schedule adherence.
Technical Support: Collaborate with product development teams, offering technical support to ensure tools and processes meet or exceed customer specifications, with a focus on CNC and welded parts manufacturing.
Continuous Improvement: Stay current with the latest tooling technologies, implementing improvements that enhance tool capability, cost-effectiveness, and production efficiency in both prototype and full-scale production environments.
Collaboration: Partner with Program Managers to prepare internal quotes for new and existing programs by coordinating with tooling and gauge suppliers to ensure timely delivery and accuracy.
Quality Assurance: Work closely with production teams to implement Poka Yoke methods and collaborate with Quality Engineers to establish achievable tolerances and characteristics for Statistical Process Control (SPC).
Compliance: Ensure all tooling and manufacturing processes comply with IATF 16949 standards, OHSA legislative requirements, and ISO 14001 environmental guidelines, reporting any non-conformances or issues.
Health and Safety: Adhere to company safety and environmental policies and take responsibility for ensuring a safe work environment, with flexibility to respond to emergency situations and assist with off-hour needs.
Education and Experience:
Preferred Experience: Prior experience as a tool and die maker or completion of an apprenticeship, along with two years in a supervisory role within a tool room.
Required Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience as a Tooling Engineer, with demonstrated success in CNC machining, welded parts, and tool development.
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience in manufacturing and tooling.
Skills:
- Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of CNC machining, tool design, and welding processes.
- Software Skills: Proficiency with CAD, CAM, CMM, and design software. Familiarity with spreadsheets, word processing, and databases is required.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with employees, customers, suppliers, and engineers at all levels.
- Problem Solving & Negotiation: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Knowledge of Equipment: In-depth knowledge of assembly, press department equipment, and tooling standards.
