Essential Functions:
- Manage capital-spending projects to ensure they meet requirements while completing projects on time and under budget.
- Drive and coordinate lean manufacturing initiatives to reduce waste and increase productivity.
- Lead, facilitate and coach lean teams through process improvements.
- Utilize lean manufacturing and quality principles to reduce waste, increase productivity and eliminate defects.
- Document procedures to ensure adoption of best practices between departments.
- Interface with customers and vendors to eliminate quality defects and improve manufacturing processes.
- Seek cost saving opportunities through increased productivity, reduced rework and overall quality improvements.
- Research and recommend new equipment and tooling to improve quality, productivity and safety.
- Provide manufacturing engineering project management and leadership.
- Support and/or lead investigations to determine root cause and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional team members to drive a continuous improvement culture.
- Other duties/responsibilities as required and/or assigned.
Other Important Details about the Role:
- May be responsible for planning, successfully implementing, and sustaining EHS programs, procedures, training, work practices, and controls, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company-specific requirements. Tracking and reporting injuries and trends, and providing guidance on prevention of recurrence of safety incidents and environmental non-compliance, including root cause analysis where applicable.
- Participate in Kaizen events and other continuous improvement projects to optimize production, facilities layout, inventory control, safety, and quality. Properly identify and justify capital equipment acquisitions to support or improve manufacturing processes.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and/or a similar discipline.
- Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as a manufacturing engineer and/or related role.
- Strong working knowledge of quality and lean principles, methodologies and tools.
- Proven ability to create and deliver effective group presentations and training.
- Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
- A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
- MBA and/or related discipline.
- Five (5) to seven (7) years relevant experience.
- Lean or Six Sigma certification.
- Functional understanding of manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, heat treating, metal forming, etc.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher and Outlook.
- Proven ability to create and deliver effective group presentations and training.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to persuade others to change and adapt to new processes.
- Must be able to demonstrate initiative and self-direction in planning, organizing, documenting and solving problems with proven ability to lead cross-functional projects.
- Experience with project management in a manufacturing environment.
- CPIM certification.
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office, shipping area and all areas of the plant which are producing product for the company. There is a relatively constant exposure to work conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels. Work conditions vary throughout the week depending on the area of the plant the Manufacturing Engineer is assigned to work in. There will be visits to both indoor and outdoor locations during all seasons of the year. When necessary, the Manufacturing Engineer must be willing and able to travel to supplier’s factories and other Valmont site when needed for business needs (up to 5%, domestic only). There is no international travel required for this position. The work environment can be fast-paced and demanding at times.
Many of the tasks are physical and the Manufacturing Engineer has to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. although the most frequent amount of weight lifted is 20 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
