Job Overview
The Atlanta Business Chronicle seeks a managing editor to help lead and grow our newsroom. This person guides the efforts of our reporters from story origin to publication. As such, the managing editor possesses solid news judgment, an ability to make snap decisions about the proper treatment of stories and confidence orchestrating many simultaneous actions of the editorial team.
Job Responsibilities
The ideal candidate has a passion for digital excellence and embraces the responsibility of balancing the relentless demands of digital story production with the high standards for story quality. The ME helps reporters find this balance and meet those standards.
The ME is the most hands-on coach of reporters, often guiding reporters in ways to find, develop and shape stories that reflect the ACBJ lens for breaking business news that is urgent and insightful.
The ME is highly organized and an excellent communicator, as the position requires managing resources across story multiple platforms, from our digital newsletters to weekly print editions. The newsroom also coordinates daily with our events team to generate and manage editorial content to support our growing events business.
The managing editor:
- Employs whip smart news judgment and a solid news sense and believes that serving our audience is a newsroom's chief responsibility.
- Makes smart snap judgments about how best to tell stories.
- Keeps the newsroom organized and manages both people and content exceedingly well.
- Mentors reporters.
- Embraces and manages relentless adaptation and growth.
- Communicate exceptionally well.
- Creates a collegial, collaborative newsroom culture that fosters growth.
Skills & Experience
- 5+ years with demonstrated success in a top leadership role preferred.
- An understanding of the changing media landscape and ability to develop strategies to address market and consumer change.
- Effective time management skills.
- The ability to exceed expectations in a results-oriented environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- BA/BS degree preferred.
- Must have experience with InDesign and similar platforms if applicable.
- Experience in MS Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Must have experience using Teams, Webex, Zoom, or related communication platforms.
