Job Profile Summary:
As the Managing Director IT - Data and AI Architecture, you will be responsible for leading the envisioning, architecture, and implementation of the organization's data and AI strategy. You will work closely with executive leadership, business architects, data scientists, platform engineers, software engineers and other stakeholders to ensure that Data and AI initiatives are accelerating FedEx towards a smarter supply chain. This senior leadership role requires deep expertise in data architecture, AI technologies, and cloud native as well as legacy systems. The successful candidate will have a strong platform and product engineering mindset with accompanying experience in data governance, compliance, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive data/AI and platform strategy supporting the organization's goals.
- Drive transformation of engineering practices towards design thinking and tech. simplification.
- Provide thought leadership and guidance on emerging data and AI trends and technologies.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to identify and prioritize data and AI initiatives.
- Collaborate with data scientists and other AI professionals to augment digital transformation efforts by identifying and piloting use cases.
Architectural Design:
- Identify and implement the optimal AI architecture, leveraging both open-source and commercial tools.
- Drive the modernization of data architectures, transitioning legacy systems to scalable, cloud-native solutions while maintaining business continuity and performance.
- Ensure the security, reliability, and maintainability of our data and AI infrastructure.
- Translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for senior leadership, ensuring data and AI strategies support broader organizational goals.
- Stay up to date on the latest data and AI technologies and best practices.
Team Management:
- Lead and mentor a team of data architects, data scientists, and other engineering professionals.
- Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within the data and AI team.
- Lead cross-functional teams in creating reusable data and AI services that can be leveraged across the enterprise, fostering a product engineering mindset within the data and AI organization.
Technology Partnerships:
- Evaluate and select appropriate data and AI technologies and platforms.
- Manage relationships with technology partners and vendors.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure data-driven solutions are aligned with business priorities and drive measurable outcomes.
Data Governance:
- Develop and implement data governance policies and procedures.
- Prioritize ethical AI implementation by safeguarding against security threats and ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Champion best practices for data security, governance, and compliance, ensuring adherence to both internal policies and external regulatory standards.
Skills Profile:
- Proven track record in building robust data management frameworks, including metadata management, lineage tracking, data governance policies, data discovery tools, data protection measures, and quality assurance processes.
- Expertise in defining and implementing data ownership, stewardship, and custodianship roles. Capable of guiding the development of effective data ownership models and associated responsibilities.
- Extensive experience with Azure services, warehouse and Lakehouse architecture, relational databases, document and key value stores, messaging and streaming frameworks.
- Knowledge of advanced analytics tools along with applied mathematics, ML and Deep Learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow) and ML techniques (such as random forest and neural networks).
- Knowledge of DevOps workflows and tools, such as Git, containers, Kubernetes and CI/CD.
- Strong proficiency in Azure cloud data solutions, including data storage, processing, and AI integration.
- Proven experience managing and modernizing legacy systems like DB2, Oracle, and ETL pipelines.
- Experience with visualization and analytics tools like Power BI.
- Proven experience on different architecture styles and design patterns
- AI/ML Integration: Deep understanding of AI model lifecycle management, including development, tuning, and deployment across hybrid environments.
Essential Functions
- Lead teams responsible for IT design and maintenance.
- Provide strategic direction for systems and application enhancements.
- Lead design projects and provide information to executives.
Domicile/Relocation Information: This position can be domiciled anywhere in the United States. The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business needs.
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree/equivalent in computer science, math or business or related field with emphasis in a quantitative discipline.
Minimum Experience
Extensive experience in systems development including design, development, implementation and maintenance of large batch or online transaction based systems. Experience in the majority of the following: mainframe, distributed systems, client server, relational systems, transaction and message systems, embedded systems, imaging and systems management and operation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Previous management experience, strong leadership, human relations and communication skills required.

Pay Transparency: This compensation range is provided as a reasonable estimate of the current starting salary range for this role across all potential locations. If this opportunity includes multiple job levels, the range is a reasonable estimate of the currentstarting salary for the lowest level to the current starting salary of the highest level. Actual starting pay would be determined by experience relative to the job, market level, pay at the location for this job and other job-related factorspermitted by law. An employee may be eligible for additional pay, premiums, or bonus potential. The Company offers eligible employees health, vision and dental insurance, retirement, and tuition reimbursement.
Pay: Pay range: 149,718.24 - 274,483.44
