Manager Underwriting (Hybrid)
PRIMARY PURPOSE: To manage property and casualty rating, underwriting, and contract/policy issuance including negotiations and placement of excess and stop loss coverage as well as overseeing the rate setting process and program underwriting for public entity pool clients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees the underwriting department and the process of setting rates, pricing membership coverage, and managing underwriting results for public entity pools.
- Stays abreast of coverage trends and acts as a resource in writing coverage documents.
- Assists in designing reports and providing management information for pooling clients.
- Manages relationships with key independent agents.
- Acts as a subject matter expert with pool board of directors.
- Manages reinsurance relationships and facilitates in placement of coverage.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Supports the organization's quality program(s).
- Travels as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides support, guidance, leadership and motivation to promote maximum performance.
- Administers company personnel policies in all areas and follows company staffing standards and training recommendations.
- Interviews, hires and establishes colleague performance development plans; conducts colleague performance discussions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Licensing
Bachelor's degree in a business-related field from an accredited college or university preferred. Licensed agent for property and casualty lines. Chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) a plus.
Experience
Eight (8) years of property and casualty underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

- Thorough understanding of property and casualty underwriting and business operations
- Strong analytical skills and interpretive skills and the ability to understand components of clients P&L
- Ability to understand complex coverage and reinsurance documents
- Ability to develop trusting relationships with external partners and clients
- Ability to present technical topics to board of directors
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
- Strong technical skills including the use of underwriting systems
- PC literate, including Microsoft Office products
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proven management/leadership skills
- Excellent negotiating skills
- Ability to create and complete comprehensive, accurate and constructive written reports
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to meet or exceed Performance Competencies
