About the Job
As a member of the Oncology leadership team, the manager provides strategic leadership and direction for oncology social work staff. The manager keeps abreast of trends in multi-disciplinary care, case management, and social work/mental health services as it relates specifically to medical/surgical oncology patients. Settings that this manager oversees include Hematology and Medical Oncology, the Center for Hematologic Malignancies, Radiation Oncology, inpatient oncology units, Neuro Oncology, Pediatric Survivorship Clinic and Community Hematology Oncology Clinics. The manager provides supervision to all oncology social workers and SW specialists. The manager is responsible for recruitment, hiring, orientation, and professional development of all oncology social workers and support staff.
The manager works collaboratively with healthcare professionals, local community representatives, and stakeholders to manage the operations of the Knight Cancer Institute Patient and Family Services department. The manager assures plans and services are aligned with OHSU's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The manager serves as an expert resource for OHSU staff and community leaders in the field of psychosocial oncology, as well as support to staff and may serve on interdisciplinary committees throughout the institution.
Function/Duties of Position:Leadership
- The manager exercises leadership internally and externally regarding the impact of social context on the outcome of healthcare, drawing on a depth of expertise in health care and social work practice, and knowledge of current trends, philosophies and theories related to social work education and practice in the area of psychosocial support for patients and families.
- The manager is expected to keep abreast of trends in social work/mental health oncology programs, with special attention to academic health center settings.
- The manager participates in national and local professional social work and oncology related associations and networks and encourages other staff to do so as well. The manager is expected to be aware of innovative models of care that optimize the use of social work services.
- The manager regularly provides input to Oncology Leadership team on emotional status of the caregiving team, providing debriefs, interventions, group facilitation as required.
- The manager will have the ability to understand systems and system integration.
Program Development and Oversight
- The manager collaborates with other members of the Oncology Leadership team to create interdisciplinary programming that optimizes patient and family health and wellness. The manager works with the social work team to combine resources for educational and/or support groups, to network with other community resources, thereby optimizing program opportunities as much as possible.
- The manager regularly participates in department meetings and leads meetings of the oncology social work team.
- The Manager also participates in department committee work.
- The manager is expected to be current on DNV, ACOS, OHSU policies and procedures, requirements and social work core competencies. The Manager is responsible for conveying these requirements to staff and ensuring compliance in a timely fashion. The manager sits on the Cancer Committee.
- The manager regularly coordinates team building activities and promotes Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging principles into daily practice.
- The manager will effectively direct departmental resources to support budget and foundation goals.
- The manager, in partnership with the Director, will maintain updated policies and procedures.
Staff Supervision
- The manager supervises the Patient and Family Services staff. The manager recruits, evaluates and hires all social work staff in collaboration with administrative and clinical leaders and ensures that all oncology social workers meet minimum qualifications.
- The manager arranges for new staff orientation/onboarding and ensures that all existing staff are current on required staff education and annual competencies.
- The manager arranges for and may conduct in-service meetings for oncology social work staff.
- The manager provides ongoing guidance and supervision of oncology social workers, giving them both ongoing encouragement and critical feedback as required. The manager is available for case consultation and guidance for team members. The manager conducts periodic formal staff assessments and GROW conversations, including routinely conducting stay interviews.
- The manager is expected to be knowledgeable about and to follow AFSCME contracts and associated work rules.
- The manager advocates for social work staff to participate in professional development at a local, regional, and national level.
- The manager manages Kronos for Patient and Family Services staff and coordinates sick and vacation requests.
- The manager manages the human resource aspects of Patient and Family Services staff and provides guidance on leaves, rights and responsibilities in coordination with the Human Resources Department
- The manager participates in the supervision of professional Social Work students and encourages others on the team to do so as well.
Education:
- Masters of Social Work (MSW)
- LCSW
Experience:
- 5-7 years in healthcare social work experience with demonstrated social work supervision and leadership
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
- Basic computer skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience in Oncology
- EPIC experience
- OSW-C
Routine office:
- Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations
- May be exposed to body fluids, tissue, possible radiation exposure, and infectious processes
- Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed
- Able to utilize office equipment within work area, including computer, smartphone, and pager in-clinic and
- remote.
- Comfortable working in a shared office environment.
Must be able to travel back and forth between Marquam Hill, Center for Health & Healing 2, and Community Hematology Oncology; must also have the ability to tele-work
