The Director Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) is responsible for providing leadership, development and implementation of a standardized vision and strategies of clinical documentation improvement activities throughout all Marshall Health Network campuses. The position works closely with key stakeholders in Coding, Quality, Infection Control, Physician Champions, physicians, residents, physician extenders and all members of the healthcare team to ensure clinical documentation is captured and represents appropriate quality, severity and reimbursement. Position oversees the activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operational objectives. In addition, this position is accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development and compliance, staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work related performance, and developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. System Specific Duties and Responsibilities: * Reviews the overall quality and completeness of provider clinical documentation to improve the quality of medical record documentation and collaborates with coding team to assure DRG classifications accurately reflect severity of illness and risk of mortality. Ensures direct alignment of clinical documentation activities across Quality and Revenue Cycle departments to support day-to-day operations of both departments and maintain a results-oriented culture * Fosters open lines of communication and maintaining peer relationships with Coding/Revenue Cycle senior leadership teams. Communicates effectively with medical staff , Coding and Coding Managers to acquire, interpret, and transmit accurate diagnostic and procedure information. * Promotes teamwork through a transparent collaborative work environment and incorporate team management skills in day-to-day processes. Cultivates positive, professional interdepartmental relationships with HIM director, Coding Staff, Clinical Documentation Specialist teams, Case management, Quality, and Medical Staff to support initiatives that advance business objectives. * Collaborates with Physicians and clinical leaders as an internal expert consultant to drive standardization and clinical improvement in documentation. Advocates for and facilitates the best practice model for CDI Quality. * Provides complete, accurate and timely reporting of clinical documentation data metrics to leadership. Clearly communicate program updates, risks, or needs in a timely manner to the leadership and actively works to resolve and mitigate risk. * Express self in a confident manner in individual and group settings. Assist with system-wide regional and/or facility educational programs including presentations, program updates, etc. * Manage all staffing activity including recruitment, candidate selection, orientation, coaching, performance management, completion of performance reviews, and disciplinary action when indicated. Demonstrate success leading teams and/or collaborating with business partners and professionals from other specialties (clinical and IT) from MHN and/or vendor or consulting organizations. * Provide service to all customers and aspects of the organization related to the clinical documentation activities while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures. * Responsible for auditing CDI staff to measure educational needs for CDI and to ensure compliance of all areas * Instrumental in developing physician education strategies to promote complete and accurate clinical documentation for the most accurate patient profile. * Responsible for increasing CDI program awareness within MHN * Responsible for understanding data collection and analysis for hospital and physician profiling through creation of reports * Disseminate CDI reports to executive leadership, physicians, and CDI team * Plans agenda and facilitates monthly departmental staff meetings * Reports to HIM MHN Director unresolved problems relating to staffing, morale, scheduling, work methods, procedures, salary adjustments, discipline, safety and other actions regarding assigned personnel * Performs other duties as required or assigned. * Performs operational assessments across the System as necessary to assess current state of processes, recommends, and implements improvements. Works directly with areas in need of improvement to assure success in meeting targets for improved outcomes. * Monitors and evaluates quality and quality of work performance of assigned personnel * Develops, directs, and/or reviews the orientation training program for new employees and continuing education programs for assigned personnel. * Serves in a leadership mentor role for managers or supervisors and CDI team in areas of operational responsibility across the System. * Develops and implements new and revised policies and procedures specific to the assigned area of responsibility to support compliant documentation practices, required content, and the timely completeness of the patient medical record. Serves as a resource on policy/procedure matters related to documentation integrity. * Discusses and resolves individual employee problems, or refers them to the appropriate authority for further action. * Follows all standard safety precautions * Adheres to confidentiality and behavioral standards * Assures payroll practices for CDI team accurately reflect hours worked and are entered in a manner which meets time expectations * Responsible for performing patient account audits involved in clinical denials from third party payers, * Responsible for composing denial rebuttals to third party payers to ensure reimbursement for DRG remains intact without degradation of the DRG. * Responsible for direct and timely communication with the Coding team to reconcile differences between CDI and Coding DRGs, Severity of Illness and Risk of Mortality (SOI/ROM), and Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC) data * Responsible for discussion with physician advisor/champion for query escalation, involving no response or physician educational needs and trends. * Collaborate with the CDI and healthcare team to facilitate documentation within the medical record that supports patient’s severity of illness and risk of mortality. Education: Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program with BSN degree and/or MSN with active nursing license. Additional credentials to demonstrate knowledge in the area CDI (CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist) with active certification. Experience: 10 – 15 years of experience in an acute care clinical setting with leadership and management responsibilities, position to include no less than 10 years of Manager level experience in an acute care complex healthcare environment. Minimum of 5-10 years of ICU nursing experience with management leadership skills strongly preferred. Previous consulting or project management experience preferred. Experience with electronic health record implementation or conversion projects required.
