Description
The Salem Harbor Station, also known as SHS, is a high-efficiency power generation facility fueled by natural gas. It boasts a capacity of 674 megawatts (MW). This facility is structured as two separate 1x1 combined cycle units, with each unit comprising a "7FA.05" combustion turbine generator, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), and a steam turbine generator. This configuration optimizes the utilization of energy from the combustion of natural gas, making Salem Harbor Station an efficient and reliable source of electricity.
Opportunity Summary
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for handling routine maintenance and repairs on plant facilities and equipment. The Maintenance Technician performs tasks in accordance with the Plant Maintenance Program and associated maintenance and repair procedures.
Primary Functions
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on combustion turbine generators (CTGs), heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and steam turbine generators to ensure optimal performance and efficiency, including inspection, lubrication, cleaning, and replacement of components.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or failures using technical manuals, diagnostic tools, and historical data, and implement corrective actions promptly to prevent downtime.
- Coordinate with maintenance team members to schedule and execute planned outages for equipment overhauls, minimizing disruption to power generation operations.
- Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document maintenance activities, update equipment records, and generate work orders for repairs or replacements.
- Participate in safety inspections and adhere to strict safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
- Collaborate with engineering and operations personnel to implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) strategies, optimizing equipment reliability and extending asset lifespan.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements through training sessions and workshops.
- Assist in maintaining spare parts inventory and conducting physical inventories to ensure plant reliability.
- Participate in administrative maintenance tasks, such as updating plant operating manuals, technical references, and maintenance records.
- Operate plant equipment as directed and perform machining tasks with precision.
- Align and balance rotating equipment and inspect/repair various components such as turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, and fans.
- Assemble, disassemble, repair, and adjust electrical and mechanical equipment as needed.
- Fully support and participate in safety and regulatory compliance programs.
- Complete additional tasks assigned by the Maintenance Manager, O&M Manager, and Plant Manager.

Working Relationships
The Maintenance Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This positions entails a Monday to Friday work schedule during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from $52.37 to $53.91 per hour.
Job Qualifications
- Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, as would be acquired in four years of high school.
- A Massachusetts Department of Public Safety Plumber or Gas Fitter License is desired.
- Four years of experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright, or equivalent is required.
- Prior experience in power plant maintenance, preferably in a natural gas-fired combined cycle facility or similar combustion turbine plant experience, is highly desirable.
- Hands-on experience performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating outage schedules, and adhering to safety protocols within a power generation environment.
- A strong background in mechanical, electrical, or related technical fields is essential. This includes a thorough understanding of power plant equipment such as combustion turbine generators, steam turbine generators, heat recovery steam generators, and associated systems.
- Proficiency in diagnostic tools, equipment maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting techniques is required. Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists, and slings.
- Ability to locate, troubleshoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment, including piping and valve installation, and/or ability to troubleshoot plant electrical systems and equipment, including motors.
- Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique problems, is desirable.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
