Job Description and Duties
The limited term/full time Maintenance Mechanic (Anti-Ligature) will be directed by the Chief Engineer II and/or the Utility Shop Supervisor in Plant Operations at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
- Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials associated with the building maintenance.
- Has the physical agility to climb and work off ladders, work on his/her hands and knees for a prolonged time, lift and carry a minimum of seventy (70) pounds, work unassisted if necessary and work standing throughout a workday.
- Maintains and upkeeps all tools, equipment, and buildings associated with the Utility Shop and Plant Operations.
- Understands and follows all Division of Industrial Safety and Building Codes when work is being performed in all areas of the facility.
- Understands and knows location of Safety Data Sheets and protective gear in regard to any hazardous material he may be required to use.
- Reads, understands and conforms to all Hospital Administrative Directives and Plant Operations Policies.
- Maintains daily tool control procedures and instructs all concerned in proper tool control.
In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
- BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Maintenance Mechanic Exam Bulletin, OR
- BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
- BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
- Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to being scheduled for an interview. Please provide proof of minimum qualifications with your application submission, which may include a copy of your unofficial college transcripts and/or out of class paperwork.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a mechanical trade. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeship program may be admitted to the examination, but must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.)
OR II: Three years of varied experience as a Building Maintenance Worker in California state service, which must have included experience working in at least three of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, heating, water and power systems; repairing various mechanical and automotive equipment; and performing minor building construction, repair and painting. AND Education: Completion of 576 hours of formalized technical instruction relating to Maintenance Mechanic offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skill Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). (An Associate of Arts Degree or Certificate of Completion in Mechanical Technology from a California Community College, which must have included at least 12 semester units of instruction in mechanical trades courses, may be substituted for the 576 hours of the technical instruction.) Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but they must present evidence of completion prior to appointment. (Two additional qualifying years of experience may be substituted for required education.)
