Town of Barnstable is embarking on a 30-year, $1 Billion sewer expansion project which will provide exciting opportunities for growth and advancement within the Division. May become eligible for on-call duties which would include a 17% stipend and overtime shifts.
The Barnstable Water Pollution Control Division is seeking a hardworking and dedicated Maintenance Laborer to join our team. As a Maintenance Laborer, you will have the opportunity to grow and develop your skills on the job and advance your career within the Division.
The Maintenance Laborer position, you will be responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks to ensure the cleanliness, maintenance, and safety of our facilities. Responsibilities include but not limited to: janitorial duties, painting, light carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, landscaping, litter pickup, moving of items, and heavy manual work including pick and shovel work, opening manholes, trench work, planting trees, etc. The Maintenance Laborer operates and maintains the wastewater treatment plant and collection systems; makes routine inspections of plant or pump station equipment and machinery; performs necessary maintenance on process machinery such as lubricating bearings, changing filters, adjusting belts and rotating machinery; makes repairs as needed; follows prescribed maintenance schedule for equipment and facilities. Ensures adherence to maintenance schedule for equipment in the water pollution control facility, and collection system. Maintains records of maintenance and repairs performed. Monitors computer readings to ensure efficient plant operation; maintains logs and records on all equipment as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school degree, preferably with classes in chemistry, biology, and/or wastewater treatment. Basic literacy and computation skills needed.
Other Requirements:
Massachusetts CDL Class B motor vehicle operator’s license with a tanker endorsement or ability to obtain during first six months of employment.
OSHA 10 certification within the first six months of employment.
Certificate in CPR and First Aid administration preferred
The following licenses may allow a candidate to earn more compensation:
Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate.
Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate
Grade 6 MA Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate
Massachusetts Class 1-B Hoisting License.
Massachusetts Class 2-B Excavating License
Massachusetts Class 3-A Electric and Air License
Collection System Grade II Certification
Collection System Grade IV Certification
OSHA 40 Certificate
Additional Qualifications:
General knowledge of equipment, methods and materials used in care and maintenance of town facilities and general knowledge of facility procedures and operations.
Ability to operate hand tools and power equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions. Ability to observe required safety precautions. Ability to maintain and keep accurate records. Ability to work cooperatively with other town employees and effectively and tactfully with the general public.

Compensation:
This is a sliding scale position where compensation will be determined based on your licensure and qualifications. Applicants who meet the required qualifications may be eligible for a higher starting pay grade.
$1,971.22 - $2,681.82 biweekly (dependent on licensure, + 17% for on-call duties), plus benefits
