About the Position
The Mail Carrier Driver provides mail processing and tracking, including bulk mail, and package distribution at the university. In addition, the position will provide daily backup for the Retail Clerk Lead in the campus Post Office.
Pick-up and sort incoming and outgoing mail/packages for campus departments and the university dorm system
Tasks include: This position functions independently follows a regular daily schedule based on established routes and vendor pickup schedules. On a daily basis, pick-up and sort mail from university departments. Pick-up university mail and packages from the USPS each morning using university vans. Read and sort incoming mail by mailstop, department, dorm or name. Mail/packages arrive multiple times during the day from USPS, UPS, FedEX or three (3) other delivery vendors. Prepare sorted mail for delivery by bagging in appropriate department bags, package containers, and dorm delivery bags.
Meter outgoing mail according to USPS postal regulations and requirements using high speed metering equipment and tracking software. Position must have knowledge of USPS postal regulations for various types of mail/packages. Position regularly processes outgoing mail/packages that require special postage and rate classifications for foreign and domestic delivery.
Send outgoing packages via USPS and FedEx using department billing codes to track charges. The majority of outgoing packages are sent using proprietary FedEx shipping software. Thorough knowledge and understanding of various package types and pricing is required of the position (international, special packaging, insuring).
The positions may be required to work overtime on Saturday mornings (independently) to provide weekend mail service to university dorms.`
Prepare and sort incoming packages
Tasks include: Unloading and receiving packages picked up and delivered by vendors. Package movement requires use of hand trucks and mailing carts.
Scan all incoming packages into SCLogic package tracking software for on-campus tracking and delivery. Position requires knowledge and familiarity with the SCLogic electronic system, including ability to set up users (both Mail Services and dorms), scan packages tracking vendor shipping barcodes, enter packages into the system accurately depending on package type, follow standard entry protocols, search and locate packages using a variety of search methods, create bag and package labels and assist walk-in customers with package pick-up, checking identification.
Bulk mail preparation (First Class and Standard)
Tasks include: Operate machinery such as high speed inkjet addressing machine, folder/inserter, bundling machine, folder and tabber to process mailings. Sort and prepare bulk mail (both standard and first class) organized by zip codes and complex USPS postal regulations for mail level sorting.
Inspect, clean and trouble-shoot listed machinery for problems and adjustments.
Deliver completed mailings to special USPS bulk mail location, interact with USPS personnel concerning bulk mailing questions and follow USPS requirements for mail delivery and receipt.
Deliver and collect campus prepared mail
Tasks include: Knowledge of four (4) established mail routes on campus and ability to carefully drive a van in highly congested areas. Familiarity with campus buildings and mailstops. Perform daily pick-up of contents in special Post Office box for Accounting and distribution of contents.
Keep department vans fueled and in working order.
Ensure quick, efficient and accurate mail deliveries.
Provide daily back-up for the Retail Clerk Lead at the campus Post Office
Tasks include: Greet customers; provide friendly and efficient cashier services, handle customer inquiries related to pricing and services, ensure all mail is handled securely, adhering to established protocols for mail safety, communicate regularly with the main USPS office and mail carriers to coordinate pick-up and delivery schedules, and operate postal machines effectively and troubleshoot minor issues as they arise.
Tasks include: Greet customers; provide friendly and efficient cashier services, handle customer inquiries related to pricing and services, ensure all mail is handled securely, adhering to established protocols for mail safety, communicate regularly with the main USPS office and mail carriers to coordinate pick-up and delivery schedules, and operate postal machines effectively and troubleshoot minor issues as they arise.
Provide direction on daily tasks to student employees
Tasks include: Respond to student employee questions about mail handling, provide direction and resolve issues or concerns. Instruct student employees on daily duties and special requests.
Provide customer service for university customers
Tasks include: Respond to mail/package questions from university customers, vendors, parents and students searching for items. Questions range from requests for special service, searches for lost items, checking campus addresses or advice about the best/most cost effective method of mail/package delivery.
Awareness and knowledge of mail handling regulations and procedures
Tasks include: Awareness and knowledge of safe mail/package handling procedures and extensive USPS regulations.
Required Qualifications
+ High school graduate or equivalent
+ Current driver's license with clean driving record and unrestricted license
+ Experience using organization-wide package tracking programs
+ Ability to enter and operate vehicles with ease
+ Ability to climb stairs for access to buildings without elevators
+ Ability to lift and carry boxes and bags of packaged mail up stairs that may be 70+ pounds
Preferred Qualifications
+ Ability to effectively operate various mail processing equipment and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs
+ Experience with bulk mailing
+ Experience with delivery driving at a large company or college/university
+ Previous USPS training, vendor training or mail certification

Salary $37,063 - $48,948 based on qualifications and experience.
