Summary:
The Machinist Intern will work with our team to program, set up and operate a variety of CNC and manual machine shop equipment types to produce precision parts to meet Wipaire and industry standards, and to meet all regulatory requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
As an intern, you will work closely with other machinists on the responsibilities listed below:
- Perform machining operations on machining centers (manual, vertical and lathe CNC), primarily working with aluminum and some steel in a low volume high mix environment.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
- Machine parts to specifications using all available and specialized equipment.
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process and alert Machine Shop Supervisor to any equipment issues.
- Suggest improvements to tools, tooling, and processes to maximize quality and efficiency.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
- Read and understand engineering drawings
- Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers, indicators, and calipers.

Required Experience:
Qualifications/knowledge, skills, abilities:
- Working towards or holds a degree in Machining.
- Able to read blueprints.
- Able to maintain high quality standards and attention to detail in all facets of the work.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Able to use critical thinking, logic, and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Able to conduct tests and inspections of products to evaluate quality or performance.
- Hear, speak, and effectively verbally communicate in the English language, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization.
- Apply manual dexterity for hand tools and power equipment use.
- Move around the plant area repeatedly throughout the day; stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
