Job Title: Machine Operator
Shift: 1st, 7am - 3pm
Pay Rate: $21.00/hr. - $23.00/hr.
Summary of Position:
The Bush & Hone Operator is responsible for setting up and operating portable hone and mandrel machines to hone internal or external surfaces of metal objects, such as prototype cylinders, bearings, bushings, or connecting rods, in accordance with detailed specifications. The role involves analyzing specifications, selecting appropriate tooling, and ensuring precise machining of components.
The Bush & Hone Operator is responsible for setting up and operating portable hone and mandrel machines to hone internal or external surfaces of metal objects, such as prototype cylinders, bearings, bushings, or connecting rods, in accordance with detailed specifications. The role involves analyzing specifications, selecting appropriate tooling, and ensuring precise machining of components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate honing machines to achieve desired internal or external surface finishes on metal objects.
- Read and interpret job orders, specifications, and blueprints to determine dimensions, tolerances, and necessary tooling for each operation.
- Position and secure workpieces in fixtures or on machine tables using clamps and wrenches, verifying positions with surface gauges and dial indicators.
- Select honing speed, depth of cut, and honing tools based on metal properties, abrasives, and shop mathematics.
- Measure honed workpieces for conformance to specifications using electromechanical limit gauges, surface gauges, micrometers, and telescoping gauges.
- Perform bushing installation by honing/reaming features in parts and using pneumatic tools, arbor press, or hydraulic puller as needed.
- Apply liquid nitrogen to facilitate bushing installations per specifications and perform surface sealing on bushings and bearings.
- Maintain and replace worn honing stones as necessary, ensuring consistent performance.
- Report production time for each job to the supervisor and set up machines for other operators when needed.
- Adhere to all safety and quality control procedures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, based on production schedules and workload demands.
Education:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Completion of trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship is preferred.
Experience:
- 2-4 years of experience in a related machining environment.
Skills:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, manufacturing sketches, and inspection tools.
- Knowledge of Quality Control processes, including the use of gauges, micrometers, dial bores, and ring gauges.
- Strong understanding of arithmetic, particularly involving decimals and fractions, and its application to drawing interpretation and dimension calculations.
- Ability to set tool lengths and operate machines independently with minimal supervision.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on precision and accuracy in all tasks.
- Physical ability to lift heavy loads and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Proficient in English, with the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
