About the Job
The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is accepting applicants for aLegal Support AssistantI/II to support the Division of Victim Services (Staff) located in the Western region (Riverside). The incumbent will be responsible for providing clerical support to management and victim services specialist.
Performs a wide variety of specialized and responsible clerical work involving the continual use of legal terminology and procedures; assists in processing and tracking a wide variety of legal documents, records, and correspondence; performs responsible and difficult specialized legal clerical work in support of Victim Services staff; performs other related duties as required.
Competitive candidates will have experience interacting with clients in crisis and familiar with trauma informed approach to service.
Highly desired: Spanish speakers, but not required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Serve as clerical support to the division of Victim Services Staff. Initiate calls to crime victims and reply to routine correspondence.
• Daily interactions with crime victims using a trauma-informed approach; awareness of trauma informed approach to service.
• Share and explain crime victim rights and court processes. Treat victims with fairness and respect for his or her privacy and dignity, and be free from intimidation, harassment, and abuse, throughout the criminal or juvenile justice process (Marsy's Law).
• Review and verify file documents to ensure that receipt and filing with appropriate court or parties is done within statutory time limits.
• May type from drafts, rough notes, and verbal instructions.
• Coordination of travel arrangements and vehicle transportation.
• May compile a variety of reports locating sources of information determining proper format for finished reports and completing legal documents for which general forms are available.
• Perform general office duties (e.g., filing, opening and distributing mail, maintaining logs, keeping statistics, and preparing reports); utilize a variety of computer systems; may interpret legal, procedural, or department prerequisites from the record to the public, law enforcement agencies and/or attorneys.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Legal Support Assistant I $20.9427 - $32.2693
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.
Experience:One year of clerical experience. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field or 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the clerical experience.)
Legal Support Assistant II $23.4115- $37.1808
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience:Two years of clerical experience, including one year in specialized legal services preparing and processing a variety of legal documents in a legal environment. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university or 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the non-specialized clerical experience.)

Option II
Experience: One year as a Legal Support Assistant I with the County of Riverside.
Knowledge of:Legal terminology and legal clerical procedures, processes and the full range of standard legal documentation appropriate to the area of law supported by the position; legal procedures and practices involved in composing, processing, and filing legal documents and reports; standard legal references and their content; business English; proper formats for preparing correspondence, reports and a wide variety of legal documents; statistical and fiscal recordkeeping principles and application; proper telephone techniques; operating principles and application of modern office equipment, including word processing, computerized data systems, storage systems, and terminology.
Ability to: Exercise good judgment and initiative in the performance of complex legal clerical work; review legal documents and records for correctness of form, sufficiency of information and conformance with prescribed legal requirements; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff, the public and other agencies; independently carry out a variety of clerical activities related to assignments; explain to concerned parties the basic procedures of the judicial process as they relate to a variety of legal documents; spell correctly, construct grammatical sentences and make mathematical computations.

Pre-Employment

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
- Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
- Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2023 employee contributions are 7.25% and will increase to 7.75% effective July 1, 2024.
A new member is defined as any of the following:
CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members".
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the County of Riverside annual actuarial valuation.

CalPERS is governed by the Public Employees' Retirement Law. The Retirement Law is complex and subject to change. DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):
0< 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)
Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.
SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance)
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable Memorandum of Understanding.
