NURSING SUMMARY/ PURPOSE OF POSITION
The primary purposes of the Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN) are to provide direct patient care, patient and family teaching, and work cooperatively within the interdisciplinary health care team in maintaining standards of nursing care under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) and within the framework of the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current, active licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse through the Ohio Board of Nursing.
- Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
- IV Certification preferred.

- Administers treatments and other direct care; prepares and administers medications as prescribed; observes and evaluates patients’ responses to medications and treatments; and identifies and promptly communicates adverse reactions to the Registered Nurse.
- Collects specimens as ordered.
- Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and students.
- Collaborates with patients, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
- LPN is a patient advocate in conjunction with the other members of the healthcare team and fosters patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction.
- Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.
- Adhere to professional standards and guidelines, including ethical actions, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations, during nursing practice.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typically works 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday.
- May require paid overtime before or after normal working hours.

- Meal and break times are coordinated with other staff members to maintain coverage
- Shifts are scheduled or changed due to staff needs of the unit/department

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Duties performed in this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Receive phone calls and messages, return calls to patients and/or family members in a timely manner.
- Triage patients on phone and walk-ins to department for any acute issues that need addressed in between office visits.
- Obtaining advice and orders from Providers related to patient issues.
- Relaying messages from Providers to patients
- Processing prescriptive medications as ordered by a Provider
- Form completion for FMLA, Disability, prescription assistance, etc.
- Referrals to tertiary or quaternary centers as requested by Provider or patient
- Coumadin Management
- Any miscellaneous requests by Director, or Provider
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Performs department specific work as required.
- Complies with all regulatory policies and procedures.
Duties performed in this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Primary duty is physician support with documentation in the EHR in a non-intrusive manner to ensure timely dictation and billing.
- Gather and chart information pertaining to the patient health history, physical exam, diagnostic findings, lab and test results, consultations with other providers as part of care coordination, and patient instruction/education with attention to detail.
- Directly observes patient encounters and documents the events and decision-making that result in accurate and appropriate medical charting.
- Assists in the processing of electronic physician orders in the EHR for radiology, lab tests, medications, and all future chemotherapy appointments ensuring accuracy to maintain safety. Proposes all orders to the physician for signature.
- Able to use critical thinking skills in patient care, order entry, and documentation.
- Compliant with all policies related to scribing.
- Able to keyboard proficiently.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Performs department specific work as required such as updating problem lists and chart preparation.

Duties performed in this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs selected clinical and clerical duties.
- Prepares patients for examination. Takes patient histories and vital signs, documenting as trained in the EMR.
- Completes Distress Screening on all new oncology patients.
- Prepares exam rooms.
- Prepares patients and assists physician during procedures.
- Provides patient instruction/education with attention to detail.
- Able to keyboard proficiently.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Some exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:Must have knowledge of medical practice and in giving patient care. Must be knowledgeable about examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment room procedures. The position requires a person who is tactful, understanding, and sympathetic in his/her relationship with the patient. He/she must have the ability to recognize serious problems when triaging calls and to know how to get the patient serviced in a timely fashion using the resources available at the Foundation. He/she must have working knowledge of record keeping requirements of the Foundation, both medical and administrative.
Problem Solving: Judgement is required when dealing with different the personalities of both patients and the medical staff. The incumbent’s duties are almost always performed within previously established Foundation policies/guidelines and physician/nurse working relationships. The incumbent may work independently at times or under the direct supervision of the physician, Department Coordinator, or Director of Clinical Operations. Depending upon their nature, difficult or unusual problems can be referred to the Department Coordinator, Director of Clinical Operations or the physician.
Accountability: The incumbent is accountable for all care that he/she renders to the patient or should have rendered to the patient. The incumbent must follow the physician’s instructions explicitly when providing care of any kind to patients. The incumbent is responsible for dealing with patients in a friendly and cooperative manner. The incumbent must make accurate decisions regarding the potential severity of problems telephoned to him/her by patients and must consult the physician in a timely fashion regarding those problems. The incumbent is required to use supplies and materials only as needed to avoid wasting supplies and materials. The incumbent is also required to see if other departments can use supplies not yet used that are close to expiration.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting Program with certification.
