JOB TITLE: Clinical Specialist (w/MD)
Immediate Supv: Clinical Manager

JOB SUMMARY:
Assists the physician with assessment and treatment or care of patients. Reports vital signs and performs triage to give physician a brief overview of patient symptoms/conditions. Documents appropriately in Electronic Health Record. Prepares referral requests and diagnostic test requests per physician orders and documents such in EHR. Prepares prescription refills in prescription per Rx protocol. Creates and monitors order request for follow up, updates preventative medicine, reminders, Logs, MIPS/Preventative for reporting purposes, Reviews and assist physician if filling out patient forms. Responds to phone calls from patients and others involved in patient care and documents in EHR. Monitors and sends via secure messaging physician’s labs to patients. Educates patients accessing practice portal. Monitors physician RX request . Is timely and accurate in work and maintains confidentiality. Assists other staff and physicians as needed, and triage as needed.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED:
Education:
Technical specialty program of 18 months minimum in length resulting in LPN license/Or CMA

-Experience:
Six to twelve months experience in a physician’s office setting preferred.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Professional Requirement/Certifications:
Current licensure as a Practice Nurse (LPN) in state of Alabama preferred.

- Superior level of critical thinking skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and commonly prescribed medications and their therapeutic values.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
- Skill in maintaining records.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
- High level of skill in computer operations (particularly in data entry).
- Superior ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, particularly with patients, patients’ families, other staff, nursing home and hospital staff and physicians.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Capable of standing at least four hours, long periods of sitting, frequent bending, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 35 lbs.

· Patient therapeutic equipment/machines
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential
- Triage patients and assist physician with treatment. (40%)
- Answer questions and telephone messages from patients regarding lab work, medications, procedures, or tests, and relay information to physician as necessary. (15%)
- Perform injections and logs appropriately in EHR, knowledge of pt sheets, EKG’s, DEXA scans, and other in-office procedures. (10%)
- Send electronic prescriptions for patients as authorized by physician. (5%)
- Update patient’s EHR (5%)
- Obtain physician authorization for referrals and diagnostic testing. (5%)
- Clean and sterilize all patient rooms and equipment. (5%)
- Review all correspondence and test results and provide to physician for review in a timely manner. (5%)
Non-essential
- Assist in triage and assist other staff and physicians as requested. (10%)

NATURE OF SUPERVISION:
No delegated authority to supervise others. Provides assistance by answering questions and helping others.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Potential level of exposure to blood borne infections is Category I. (See policy regarding classification of work related tasks for universal precautions.)
- Is subject to bio-hazardous wastes, electrical current, flammable explosive gases.
- Is subject to infection. Includes a variety of exposures such as:
* Collection or handling of body fluids (e.g., blood, urine, sputum).
* Caring for patients with highly infectious/contagious disease.
* Subject to multiple interruptions and potential eye strain.
* Possible exposure to radiation.
* Long periods of data entry.
* Proximity to moving parts.
