Lower School Physical Education Teacher /Department Leader
This is a full time position reporting to the Director of Athletics.The Lower School Physical Education Department Leader will oversee and direct the Lower School Physical Education department, teach LS PE and be a leader for professional development and build/implement curriculum in Lower School.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversight and implementation of the Lower School Physical Education program and curriculum including play day and other special events
- Teach Lower School PE Classes- Assume responsibility for all work included in a full time teaching assignment including review and writing of department progress reports, conferences and home/school communication
- Work in partnership with the PE staff to articulate, evaluate and develop new curriculum
- Effectively organize space, equipment, and class schedules. Coordinate storage and security of equipment and supplies. Oversee maintenance and repair of equipment, fields and storage areas
- Coordinate with Lower School Administration recess duties and day to day weather related decisions regarding indoor/outdoor recess
- Prepare budget and order Physical Education equipment and supplies. Provide adequate equipment that allows all children to be active at the same time (e.g., one ball per child). Supervise yearly inventory
- Coordinate with various departments including Head of Lower School to eliminate facility conflicts (calendar committee: events scheduler, physical plant etc.)
- Collaborate with AD/Head of Lower School in evaluation of PE staff and organize/run PE department meetings and professional development
- Attend Curricular leaders meetings
- Write and review report cards
- Coach a middle school sport per season
General Responsibilities
- Participate in screening and interviews of prospective PE teacher candidates and mentor new Physical Education teachers
- Relay information between instructors and administration
- Support the school mission, philosophy, policies and procedures
- Organizing division wide physical activity experiences. Plan division wide activities.
Qualifications and Expectations
The successful candidate must...
- Demonstrate maturity, collegiality, flexibility, and commitment to equity and professional growth
- Work collaboratively, build relationships, and make connections with children, families, and colleagues
- Have a minimum of three years teaching elementary physical education
- Hold a bachelor's degree (elementary education, physical education, exercise science preferred)
- Have knowledge and/or training in cultural competency
- Possess excellent speaking writing, and organizational skills
- Be able to occasionally lift to 45 pounds
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
