JOB TITLE: LOCAL BUILDING INSPECTOR
DEPARTMENT: OFFICE OF THE BUILDING INSPECTOR
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULLTIME/NON-EXEMPT
UNION/NON-UNION: SUPERVISORY AND PROFESSIONAL UNION
**ANTICIPATED START DATE FEBRUARY 2025**
The City of Pittsfield's Office of the Building Commissioner is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Local Building Inspector. Under the supervision of the Building Commissioner, the Inspector’s responsibilities will include reviewing permit applications, plans and specifications and issuing permits.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs required inspections and periodic inspections as required by 780 CMR, the Massachusetts Building Code, will complete inspection reports and issue certificates of inspection.
- Under the supervision of the Building Commissioner, the inspector enforces the provisions of the State Building Code and any other applicable statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances and/or bylaws.
- Assists the Building Commissioner in the performance of their duties.
- Performs inspections of new and existing buildings and structures.
- Examines and/or approves plans and specifications for new buildings and structures, and for repairs and alterations of existing buildings and structures.
- Issues permits and maintains electronic records of permits granted and inspections completed.
- Writes and maintains inspection reports and violation notices.
- Investigates building code and zoning violation complaints and takes the necessary actions to enforce violation corrections.
- Performs other local building inspector duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- The inspector shall have had at least five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design or in the alternative a two-year associate degree in a field related to building construction or design or any combination of education and experience which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability.
- Shall have a general knowledge of the quality and strength of building materials; a general knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe exits; and a general knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety, comfort, and convenience of the occupants of a building or structure, and the energy requirements of the Massachusetts Building Code.
- Shall obtain the required certification by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards in accordance with the provisions of 780 CMR 110.R7.
- Shall obtain continuing education credit hours required to maintain Building Official certification.
- Massachusetts Class D driver’s license.
- Ability to interact and communicate with customers on a cordial and professional basis.
- Experience writing cost estimates and construction contracts.
- Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in conflict resolution and problem solving.
- Ability to interact with people on an up-beat and friendly basis, regardless of circumstances.
- Highly organized self-starter with ability to work independently.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Some work is performed in office conditions; primarily involves field visits with exposure to variable weather conditions, with occasional walking, standing, and climbing. Exposure to loud noise and the hazards associated with construction sites, including exposure to potentially dangerous materials and electrical wiring. Inspector may be expected to respond to emergency calls after hours, as needed.
The workload fluctuates according to construction activity and other events; attends meetings of City boards.
While performing the duties of the Building Inspector, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, an automobile, and inspection tools; moves throughout the office/building and inspection sites which may include flights of stairs. Lifts/moves objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.
HOURS
7:30am-3:00pm, Monday – Friday
35 hours per week
SALARY
Starting rate $ 27.03 $28.54 an hour
Annual increases up to $37.43 an hour
