DEFINITION:
Provides highly skilled vocational nursing care involving a wide format of treatments and evaluative judgment to patients in a hospital inpatient care unit; or, in addition to performing direct patient care, has responsibility for guiding nursing personnel in a hospital impatient care unit.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
In the first role, LVN IIs perform skilled vocational nursing care to assigned adult or pediatric inpatients in a hospital impatient care unit. These positions apply such techniques of vocational nursing as giving treatments including those which involve the administration of medications, use of specialized equipment and provide direct bedside care. Incumbents in these assignments require more skill and judgment to perform safely and competently than general vocational nursing care.In the second role, positions allocable to this class are assigned on a regularly scheduled basis to lead a small group of LVN Is and/or nursing attendants assigned to provide direct patient care to adult or pediatric inpatients in a hospital impatient care unit. Positions in this assignment are responsible for scheduling, assigning and guiding nursing personnel in the medication, treatment and nursing care of inpatients and ensure that these tasks are carried out.In either assignment, duties performed require the exercise of vocational nursing judgment involving the application of nursing principles and techniques normally acquired through completion of vocational nurse training and comprehensive patient care experience in a hospital impatient care unit. Incumbents in these positions apply definitive criteria contained in nursing policies and procedures when making medication, treatment and nursing care decisions, and are continually in a position to interpret manifest indications of patient's condition and report such indications when they fall outside preestablished limits. LVN IIs normally work under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician and administer care or procedures for the patient ordered by the physician or contained in a nursing care plan; but, they are expected to contribute to the development of the nursing care plan with information and recommendations.
