Position Overview:
The Cardiovascular Technician will provide diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular services to veterans at the VA GLA Healthcare System. This role involves assisting cardiologists in catheterization and electrophysiology procedures, operating complex medical equipment, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Assistance During Procedures:
Function as the first assistant to cardiologists during procedures such as coronary angiography, electrophysiologic studies, and pacemaker implantation.
Operate radiologic fluoroscopy equipment to visualize images and provide support for procedures including rotational atherectomy, intracardiac echocardiography, and temporary pacemaker insertion.
Diagnostic Testing and Monitoring:
Perform and support diagnostic tests such as ECG, intravascular ultrasound, and Holter monitoring.
Monitor cardiac rhythms, blood pressure, and arterial and intracardiac readings, identifying abnormalities and critical conditions.
Patient Care:
Prepare patients for procedures, apply dressings, collect blood samples, and remove access sheaths post-procedure.
Operate defibrillators and provide CPR in emergencies.
Equipment Setup and Maintenance:
Set up sterile supplies, fluoroscopy systems, hemodynamic monitoring computers, and specialized cardiac equipment.
Perform daily calibrations, quality checks, and ensure proper functioning of all procedural equipment.
Record Keeping and Reporting:
Use CPRS for scheduling, documenting patient exam notes, and reporting.
Maintain logs, manage archiving of studies, and assist with data collection for quality assurance.
Compliance and Safety:
Adhere to infection control and safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment and compliance with JCAHO and OSHA requirements.
Qualifications:
Licensed Cardiovascular Technologist in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
Minimum of 2 years of experience performing catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
Proficient in diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures and operation of related medical equipment.
Certified in relevant medical and technical disciplines with documented training.
Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and ECG interpretation.
Standards and Conduct:
Maintain professional attire and personal hygiene in line with healthcare facility policies.
Wear VA-issued identification badges at all times.
Attend mandatory VA training on safety, diversity, infection control, and other relevant topics.
Health Requirements:
Pre-assignment medical examinations and immunizations as per OSHA and VA guidelines.
Annual PPD skin tests and respiratory assessments (if applicable).
Free of infectious diseases and documented immunity to required conditions.
Schedule and Replacement:
Provide continuous coverage for scheduled shifts.
Arrange replacement personnel in the event of absences exceeding two consecutive shifts.
Compliance with Policies:
Follow VA Healthcare System policies and procedures.
Report incidents and submit documentation promptly as required.
