Library Technician
General Position Summary:
Under immediate supervision, performs complex non-professional manual duties relative to the care and re-shelving of unique collections in proper order using the NLM classification system. Assists in other support tasks as assigned.
- Job Type: Temporary Full-Time (6 - 8 Months)
- This position is performed 100% onsite.
- Hourly Rate: $24.07/ $50,065.00 plus $4.53
Essential Job Functions:
- The purpose of this position is to maintain the library’s unique collection by reshelving library materials and to maintain all materials in the unique collections in a neat and orderly fashion.
- Arranges library materials on book trucks and reshelves them in proper order.
- Shelf-reads and straightens materials on the shelves or in the collection while reshelving in accordance with the NLM classification system.
- Move, shift and interfile library materials, following the NLM classification system.
- Reshelves various materials in the library
- Ensure shelves are kept in correct order, i.e., the appearance, neatness, and order of the volumes is not altered or degraded during the shifting process.
- Shift materials in shelving stacks to make space for new additions, following complex shifting plans.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Ability to follow detailed directions.
- Ability to maintain regular work schedule
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work.
- General knowledge of commonly used practices, and procedures in handling unique collection materials.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others in the workplace.
- Ability to perform a high volume of work with accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to plan and organize workload effectively.
- Ability to work independently, set priorities and follow general protocols and procedures
- Ability to accept supervision and correction.
- Ability to exercise care in the handling of unique collection materials, i.e., pick up and reshelving.
- Ability to be respectful of shelflist order at all times.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, such as standing, stooping, bending, or walking for extended periods of time, climbing ladders, or pushing carts laden with supplies or library materials.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum 1 year experience with handling library materials or equivalent experience in a library support position.
- Ability to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Proficiency in arranging journals using the NLM classification system
