Title: Legislative and Policy AssistantLocation: 130 Trinity Ave SW 5th Floor Atlanta, Georgia 30303-0000Interview:- WebcamSUMMARY:The Legislative and Policy Assistant supports the Office of the Chief of Staffin carrying out the legislative priorities of the Atlanta Board of Education.This role advocates for the interests of public schools, public school studentsand public school teachers before federal, state and local government agencies.During the legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly, the Legislativeand Policy Assistant will collaborate with the Chief of Staff and externalcontract lobbyists on issues of concern to Atlanta Public Schools. Beyond theGeneral Assembly, this role will support the Chief of Staff as they advise theBoard of Education and senior district leaders on the development andimplementation of school board policies and district administrative regulations.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:o Tracks legislation and other developments in his or her assigned issue areasand briefs the Chief of Staff, senior district leadership and Members of theAtlanta Board of Education;o Monitors legislative developments within State House and Senate committees;o Monitors legislation on the State House and Senate floor, providing the Chiefof Staff withinformation on each vote;o Prepares for and attends legislative committee meetings and hearings;o Performs special projects assigned by the Chief of Staff;o Works well under pressure and handles stress;o Works a flexible schedule as necessary; ando Performs other duties as assigned.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:A bachelor’s degree or higher education level is required (preferably inpolitical science,government, education. public policy, public administration or pre-law)including strong academic credentials. Some period of related experience ortraining in legislation, policy or equivalent is beneficial.SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:o Thorough knowledge of the legislative process and of organization andprocedures of the Georgia General Assembly;o Ability to perform the essential job functions above;o Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in advocating for thelegislativepriorities of the Atlanta Board of Education and Atlanta Public Schools;o Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others;o Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful,pleasant, andprofessional manner;o Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures;o Knowledge of office computer applications; ando Proficiency in word processing.WORKING CONDITIONS:o Work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usuallymoderate; ando Ability to work in a small work station and at the State Capitol without anexpectation ofprivacy.
