DESCRIPTION
The Long Beach City Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced civil litigation secretary (legal assistant) to join our Litigation Division. The successful candidate should have a significant civil litigation secretarial background and be able to provide direct secretarial support to two attorneys with little to no supervision. Each attorney in our division has a heavy caseload in one or more of the following practice areas: personal injury/wrongful death, civil rights, and/or employment. The position may be filled at a grade level II or III depending on the qualifications of the person selected.
SPECIAL NOTE
This is an "at-will" full-time temporary position to backfill a career employee while on leave. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the City Attorney, and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Maintain litigation calendar, which requires knowledge of court filing deadlines; track deadlines; and coordinate/schedule meetings, depositions, and appearances for attorney(s);
Prepare, file, and serve legal documents (pleadings, discovery, motions, briefs, subpoenas, trial documents/binders) in compliance with applicable rules;
Organize and maintain litigation case files;
Ensure all case materials are entered into electronic case management system;
Communicate in a courteous and professional manner with clients (including City management), City employees, witnesses, experts, vendors, opposing counsel, and court personnel;
Provide back-up support to other Litigation Division attorneys as needed;
Perform other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
Three (3) years of paid, full-time experience working as a civil litigation secretary.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE
Extensive experience drafting civil litigation documents, such as pleadings, discovery, motions, and trial documents;
Knowledge of California civil procedure and Superior Court rules for litigation, including e-filing process and civil discovery;
Experience with court deadline calendaring and scheduling for supported attorney(s);
Ability to accurately type at a minimum rate of 50 words per minute, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook;
Excellent communication, proofreading, typing, and editing skills;
Strong organizing skills;
Attention-to-detail;
Discretion when dealing with confidential matters;
Being reliable and a team player;
Knowledge of Federal litigation practice and court procedures is a plus.
