About the Job
We are seeking a Lead RHEL Linux System Engineer to support our Internal Revenue Service (IRS) client.
The Lead Linux System Engineer will have primary responsibility for overall end to end management of approximately 15 RHEL 8.9 Linux servers that support the project's custom application. This requires maintaining high availability/uptime of the servers that support over 4000 production users who actively use the system.
The location of work is primarily remote but will require periodic onsite at the IRS facility in Martinsburg WV. Infrequent meetings in Washington D.C. may also be necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the systems requirements and specifications gathering, review and verification processes.
- Translate business requirements into system specifications and functional designs.
- Support and Actively contribute to the elaboration and execution of the various test strategies applicable to the systems projects.
- Review and monitor execution and completion of system processes.
- Establish and perform quality reviews of process outputs.
- Perform activities required to produce system documentation (e.g., design specifications, user manuals) and provide end user training as needed.
- Serve as the point of contact and client interface for data and functional analysis.
- Participate in project meetings to represent MAXIMUS in addressing needs of the client and other project stakeholders participate in systems testing activities.
- Work with stakeholders in defining solution to business problem or change request.
- Prepare system documentation, such as functional specifications, release notes.
- Perform duties in conjunction with above requirements such as status reports, team meetings.
- Review and provide feedback on deliverables such as system requirements specifications and test cases.
- Implement process improvement by creating documentation and training Team members on technical and functional processes.
- Coordinate, install, monitor, and troubleshoot hardware, applications and software used on Linux Tier 1 systems. This will include servers across Production, Test and Development environments.
- Ensure the servers are maintained in accordance with IRS security requirement guidelines and processes and procedures outlined in the IRS Internal Revenue Manual (IRM).
- Apply remediation measures as identified by various security scans run on a daily/weekly basis.
- Plan and coordinate the installation of new products or equipment, installation of new or implementation of new Linux operating systems patches, upgrades, and releases.
- Install hardware, applications, and software; control current versions in use and future releases of application software and document the physical configuration of the system.
- Optimize the functionality of networks and systems using performance tuning tools and techniques.
- Diagnose and recover failed systems using systems diagnosis tools and fault identification techniques.
- Resolve installation problems, identify, and mitigate security vulnerabilities and risks, and maintain server integrity and availability.
- Initiate corrective or preventive actions, such as increasing disk or memory capacity to improve system performance.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- At least seven (7) years of experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Operating System (7.x,8.x,9.x)
- Experience working in production environments, preferably supporting a Federal Government Agency with high server availability requirements.
- Experience identifying bottlenecks and implementing performance tuning measures.
- Experience working with servers in a Production datacenter.
- Experience remediating Vulnerabilities, patching, and ensuring servers are in compliance with agency CSIRC (Computer Security Incident Response Center) policies.
- Able to schedule appropriate backups and restore from backup as needed.
- Experience with configuring and resolution of networking issues including firewall setup. Have a strong understanding of TCP/IP and networking fundamentals.
- Hands on experience with Linux shell scripting and automation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem resolution abilities.
- Able to communicate in a clear, concise, and calm manner with all stakeholders and work with other System, Network, and storage administrators.
- Ability to facilitate technical discussions and advise on RHEL OS related areas at an expert level.
- Great verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well independently or in a team setting
- Preferred qualifications:
- Experience supporting IRS environment
- Experience with Puppet
- Hands on experience supporting production servers to meet FISMA requirements.
- Experience interpreting Qualys, CSIRC reports, vulnerability scans and leading efforts to remediate findings.
- SELinux configuration and management.
Additional Requirements as per contract/client:
- Candidates must meet requirements to obtain and maintain an IRS Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) clearance (active IRS Moderate Risk MBI clearance is a plus).
- Candidates must be a US Citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident (Green Card status) for 3 years and be Federal Tax compliant.

Pay Transparency
Maximus compensation is based on various factors including but not limited to job location, a candidate's education, training, experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value analysis including seniority and merit systems, as well as internal pay alignment. Annual salary is just one component of Maximus's total compensation package. Other rewards may include short- and long-term incentives as well as program-specific awards.
